Car of the year should be limited to what is affordable to the middle class.

So wait a year or two longer and all of a sudden you can afford one.

Joins a long list of "fine" cars of the year, like the Mustang II, the Vega, the Omni, the Citation, the PT Cruiser, and the Probe.
Also means 3 of the last 5 COTY are completely out of the average buyer's affordability range, which to me, kinda diminishes the meaningfulness of the COTY award, since very, very few will actually be able to get one.

Why the hate on the award given to this car I think its the perfect choice cause i believe as per their Description of what the requirement is, that it has to be all new or fully redesigned and that it has to move the automobile forward and does what it intended purpose is excellent or something of that sorts they prolly explained it before in past mags. Oh and just cause the average consumer cant afford one doesnt mean it shouldnt win the award. Atleast they arent just giving it to the next coolest super exotic costing millions of dollars. I think they do have a price cap of 150k i believe.

And it's not that it's electric that it bothers me. Ultimately, I don't like COTY being given to very low volume, exclusive, boutique cars. What's the point of declaring a COTY that almost no one will be able to get? I had the same opinion a few years ago when the GT-R got the award.

The MT COTY award should help Tesla repay the 500 million dollar Department of Energy loan they are in danger of defaulting.
Ironic how defunct Solyndra is right next to the factory where Tesla is building the cars. |
