Car of the year should be limited to what is affordable to the middle class.

So wait a year or two longer and all of a sudden you can afford one.

Joins a long list of "fine" cars of the year, like the Mustang II, the Vega, the Omni, the Citation, the PT Cruiser, and the Probe.

Also means 3 of the last 5 COTY are completely out of the average buyer's affordability range, which to me, kinda diminishes the meaningfulness of the COTY award, since very, very few will actually be able to get one.

Why the hate on the award given to this car I think its the perfect choice cause i believe as per their Description of what the requirement is, that it has to be all new or fully redesigned and that it has to move the automobile forward and does what it intended purpose is excellent or something of that sorts they prolly explained it before in past mags. Oh and just cause the average consumer cant afford one doesnt mean it shouldnt win the award. Atleast they arent just giving it to the next coolest super exotic costing millions of dollars. I think they do have a price cap of 150k i believe.

Plenty of middle class families can afford $50k cars, if they want them. Can the majority? Maybe not. But its not astronomically, outragously expensive for them either.

I mean, are the ZL1 or Corvette cars exclusively for the rich?

The ZL1 is the absolute top of the Camaro price range, though. $50k is the bargain basement starting point of the Tesla. A conventional car will also last twice as long under normal conditions as the batteries in the Tesla, so if you want to compare price based on longevity, you really have to equate a $50k electric car to a $100k conventional car.

And it's not that it's electric that it bothers me. Ultimately, I don't like COTY being given to very low volume, exclusive, boutique cars. What's the point of declaring a COTY that almost no one will be able to get? I had the same opinion a few years ago when the GT-R got the award.

The point is not affordability, it's innovation. The issue with compact and subcompact cars is that they rarely contain any new tech or radically new designs, as those designs have all been hashed out on the more expensive offerings. After that, said tech gets refined down to the point where it becomes more affordable for the masses and THEN gets put into a compact car, at which point it's no longer "ground breaking". If you bother to read the motor trend article, they do spell out their reasons as to why they picked this car as Car of the Year, and it wasn't because it was electric.

So, I am wondering, did you have these same issues when the $40k COMPACT Chevy volt got the calipers last year?

The MT COTY award should help Tesla repay the 500 million dollar Department of Energy loan they are in danger of defaulting.
Ironic how defunct Solyndra is right next to the factory where Tesla is building the cars.
