Motortrends Car of the Year: Tesla Model S

http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/...model_s/?ti=v2

Makes sense to me. Can't wait to see what they come out with for a mass market vehicle.

Seems like they've included pricey cars in the past.

That's the MAX price, base price is $58,570 before tax credits. What's the price of a fully loaded Corvette or Cadillac? Bet it's pretty close to 100k.

Be nice if the thing was actually in production..

I've been on the waiting list, deposit and all for several years, was supposed to be 2012, then 2013, last notice I got was 2014 for my bid number..

not a big deal to me, as it will be the wife's new car, and she is currently content with her Camry and since I already bought the Camaro this year, I don't need another car payment just yet..

But if it is going to receive accolades at the very least it should be in full swing production.

and before I get flamed for the whole electric car thing:

My wife drives a total of about 10 - 15 miles a day, she is a home maker and shuttle driver for our daughter and all her after school activities, so a hybrid or electric car suits her fine as she never gets on a highway/freeway or goes above 40mph. Her car is basically a grocery getter and taxi cab.

We have Solar Generation on our house, so the purchase of a pure electric vehicle is ideal for us, as it would never actually cost us anything to charge/run insofar as "fuel" is concerned.

Why not a volt? because it is too small to suit our needs.

Sounds like demand may have exceeded their production capabilities, I've
seen photos of deliveries for the Model S on the net. Plus, once they have the supercharging stations in place along the interstates you'll be able to go cross country and only have to pay for food

This quote from the Motor Trend article really sums up why I love Tesla so much:
Quote:
The mere fact the Tesla Model S exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that once made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world. That the 11 judges unanimously voted the first vehicle designed from the wheels up by a fledgling automaker the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year should be cause for celebration. America can still make things. Great things.

There's tons of model s vehicles around NorCal, there's at least 15 or 20 sitting on the local Tesla lot. I think they are mass produced at this point, at least for 2 months now.

They are in production, but very limited, as of right now reservations on the "Signature" Model is closed as they are "Sold out" for 2012 and 2013.

The base model is available, yes.. The "Performance" models are not available until 2014. Ours is a Signature Performance.. Higher rated inverter motor and larger batteries.

Our original "production" date was 2-2012, the first set back was the death of several of their top people in a plane crash in 2010.. Fully understandable..

again, I am not upset in the least, I would rather it be done right than on time..

Thats looks more like the price of the no-longer-for-sale roadster, not the Model S

This car clearly SHOULD have won CoTY - it innovates on levels that other manufacturers have not been able to meet and it is supposedly sporty in guise, spirit, and practice. The rest of the competition are CUVs and other vanilla mid-sizers. The only concern I remember being brought up were panel gaps and other quality control issues - have these been resolved?

Popular mechanics also named a CoTY, but it wasn't the Tesla. Of all places where engineering and cool tech seems like it would have a heavy influence - the Ford Escape apparently won out - bleh.
