The main reason why I don't like BMW's and European cars in general is that I value maintenance over interiors. German cars are notorious for reliability and cost of repairs is through the roof. However, the come with lots of little nice things and the interior materials are quite good.

I almost have a degree in engineering, 1 month left. Two things have been beat into my head over the last 4 years.
1) The perfect design is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
2) Anything that can go wrong, eventually will

I just can't justify something that will cost me twice as much while I own it. Its not an issue of affordability, its common sense. If I needed a top notch interior things might be different. I look at the entire picture when I decide whats best. Performance, reliability, fuel economy, repair cost, vehicle cost, build quality, interior quality, styling. Based on all that, I just don't think europeans are worth it. Also using the same logic, I have come to the conclusion that the new Camaro will be the absolute best car on the market.

I hear and agree with what you're saying, but it has little to do with country of origin. It has everything to do with physical mechanical/electrical content, and these car have TONS, a little too much in some cases. So in that sense the more technology you have there's little doubt something will fail. You wouldn't say the same for Audi's, BMW's and MB's of the early 90's,80's and years prior, would you?

But the German approach to engineering is to make things more high tech, light weight, and cutting edge. this is nothing new. It can be seen in WWII. The Tigers and the Panzers (designed in part by Porsche) were the most fearsome weapons on the battlefield. Typically they were faster, better armoured, and better gunned than comparable opponents their reputation is well deserved. But the odds of them making it to the battlefield weren't that great. And it was extremely difficult to produce the things. The American and Russian designs were almost as effective, in some instances better, but could be built on a massive scale and repaired by the crew while in the field. The same qualities that enabled the tanks to achieve better capabilities came at the expense of maintenance and mass production.

It doesn't specifically have anything to do with the country of origin, but there are different mindsets for different areas. Germany/Europe tries to maximize capabilities, resulting in more complex designs that are more prone to failure. American/Canadian designs tend to centre on robustness and repair-ability. Russian designs attempt to make things cheap and quick to build. Japan/Asia generally go for things that are small and efficient. That is their area of expertise, at least in the auto industry. Hence, most luxury/performance cars come from Germany. America dominates the pickup truck market. Japan has the economy cars nailed. Sure there is some deviation. But it tends to be a fair generalization.

I am dead serious that I am going to do this:

I am planning to mount a Mercedes Emblem on the hood of my mustang so that the end of my hood looks identical to a Mercedes.

Then I am going to use double-sided tape to put a BMW emblem on the back where the Ford emblem is.

I live in an area where every other car is a 4-door black mercedes OR any/model/BMW.

I have been DYING to do this, but just haven't had the time yet.

The G8 has a leg up because it is exotic in it's own right.
hi-compression V8 engine/stickshift/4-door sedan.
