When students learn the orders of operations, PEMDAS (or GEMDAS as I teach it), few people make the distinction that the P (for parenthesis) or G (for grouping symbols) needs to have some other type of math inside. You cannot have a group of 1. Since there is only one number, it defaults to meaning multiplication. And as stated many times in this thread, those mathematical operations have equal precedence, and should be approached from left to right. If teachers would only make the distinction that there needs to be "something happening" inside the parenthesis (or brackets, braces ...) otherwise ( ) means just multiply, but in the correct order.

Just my $.02 ...

The answer is 54. My example is a part of what has been going around Facebook for a couple days. I shortened the equation to simplify the issue.

The equation inside parentheses is calculated first, but in this example, it already is solved. 3=3. Move on to the next part. I am glad to see there are people with a minimum of 3 connected brain cells in here.

Have a nice day.

When you wake up and pee in the toilet, assuming you hit the water, you have used algebra and got the correct answer. The angle of the dangle.

Learn something new every day. I don't think I've ever heard of PEDMAS or GEDMAS. I was taught BEDMAS (for Brackets ...). Still means the same thing though.

Wouldn't that be geometry?
Algebra is used to determine that I have to take a 1/4 of a Viagra everyday so it will stick out far enough that I don't pee on my feet.

Math is not the "end-all be-all" of an intelligence test.

If you just take it the simple way it would be geometry. But when you start to create drawings with the bubbles it becomes algebra.

THIS... is the correct answer.
Math and sciences are the part that require 3 connected brain cells.
Liberal arts only requires 2.
