It is merely solving a problem within the given constraints. Those constraints are piece cost, investment, mass, ease of manufacturing, among others. These generally don't change across industries.

For example, I could make every car lighter by using Carbon Fiber or Aluminum, both significantly lighter, but far more expensive than steel. So I can solve one part of the problem, mass, quite easily but burning through a hole in the piece cost and investment.

If I put the "easy" low mass solution, I either a) have to charge more for the product and risk losing sales or b) make less money on the final product risking my company.

So the "perfect" solution would be easy to manufacture, require low investment and piece AND be durable and reliable, oh and satisfy the customer.

Any college grad can design a bracket out of unobtanium. It takes skill and experience to solve engineering problems with many constraints.

And the magic is trying to get all the parts and subsystems in a car together that still meets it's objectives.

Initial production cost would be high with my Lightenstrongium, mainly due to the production of the forming machines, but once things get moving, costs would go down.

yes, but high mileage f-bodies are still reliable. plus it shows you how much people still value them. even in older age and higher mileage, they are still worth more.
