And probably some pretty crappy ones too.

Haha true. Most of my ideas are just shuffling existing products and programs around anyways...bringing cars from overseas markets (like Holden) to the US and stuff. It probably isn't as simple as I'd like to think it is, but...

Ahhhh, Fen you are missing the true art of engineering.

It is merely solving a problem within the given constraints. Those constraints are piece cost, investment, mass, ease of manufacturing, among others. These generally don't change across industries.

For example, I could make every car lighter by using Carbon Fiber or Aluminum, both significantly lighter, but far more expensive than steel. So I can solve one part of the problem, mass, quite easily but burning through a hole in the piece cost and investment.

If I put the "easy" low mass solution, I either a) have to charge more for the product and risk losing sales or b) make less money on the final product risking my company.

So the "perfect" solution would be easy to manufacture, require low investment and piece AND be durable and reliable, oh and satisfy the customer.

Any college grad can design a bracket out of unobtanium. It takes skill and experience to solve engineering problems with many constraints.

And the magic is trying to get all the parts and subsystems in a car together that still meets it's objectives.

I've just wanted to be a veterinarian for longer I guess. If it doesn't work out, I'll go into engineering.

Or if GM offers me a job, I'll take that too. They never got back to me about taking over Bob Lutz's job though. I had some pretty good ideas. :(
So do I. :(

Unobtainium?

My Wishalloy is both lighter and stronger.

And cheaper.

Which is why I'd probably be better organizing GM's brands than actually engineering the cars...

I'll take Tom Stephen's job now.

My parents leave car decisions up to me. I sold them the Malibu, our Chevy salesman joked that they could hire me to replace him when he retires. I did the research, I memorized the specs, and I bashed the hell out of that corolla my mom wanted.

Perhaps, X. This is often discussed among structural engineers over coffee, Wishalloy vs Unobtanium. This debate among the purests, combined with youthful exuberance............and beer ...........can lead to terrible consequences.
