Many times the car with handicap placards or plates are driven by spouses, relatives or friends who do not need them, that is in some cases why people jump out of their vehicles and run into a stores, they are not the handicapped ones.

A little story, quite a few yrs ago I was in a serious motorcycle accident, my foot was pretty much detached, they wanted to amputate it, I refused to let them, I had 12 broken bones including two collar bones. I was in a wheel chair but it was very difficult for me to wheel around because of the broken collar bones so I depended on others. There was one time where I had to be on my own, went to a bank to get needed money so I parked in a handicapped spot, the friggin' cop had seen me in the wheel chair, when I was out of sight he wrote me for parking in a handicap spot without a placard or plate. I beat in court but WTF really. The whole system is f'd up.

Yea being low to the ground, yea I have to say also know spouses of handicapped use the cards because its available ....so unwind your blouse and relax.

I hear ya and agree that there are folks that family members will wrongfully use them.

My point is that the public shouldn't make any quick judgments (like you posted and took a pic of) just based on the type of vehicle parked in the spot with a legitimate place card. I have had to deal with this the last 30 years. Be thankful you don't.

What if your play stick doesn't like to come out and play anymore? That's a pretty large handicap to me.

I can respect handicap parking spaces but I do feel they are abused.

Example being, if you have a hard time walking, getting out of a car that is practically on the ground increases difficulty of mobility.

My father-in-law is over 70 years old, has had 2 major back surgeries and is legitimately handicapped. However, he only uses his handicap when grocery shopping so he doesn't have to walk far carrying groceries or pushing a cart. Otherwise, he parks like a normal person.

To me, if you can still walk without without unbearable discomfort or pain, you should not park in a handicap spot whereas someone that is paralyzed needs it.

I've broken many toes and have had many knee injuries before, yet, I've never had an interest, desire or reason to try and obtain a handicap plate. If I can still drive, walk, sit on a toilet, I can go the extra 50ft or so to park somewhere else.

Personally, if I had a major health problem that justified having handicap parking access, I would not be driving a sports car with my condition. That gives an unknowing party to assume that you are just abusing the system in place and don't care. It is much more logical and feasible for a handicap person to drive a car that is comfortable, offers ease of access in/out and can accommodate a wheel chair if need be.

Can we all agree that there are a lot of people that do in fact abuse this system and others that truly need them and cannot function as a normal person?

Wife gets this all the time. Middle age and relatively healthy looking. but as a cancer survivor, with miofacial(not sure how its spelled) pain syndrome and extensive nerve damage from her chemo. And let me pull up with her in my camaro, and people sometimes lose their shit. But her semi loud G8 gets similar looks.

That is a good reason then.

Handicap spaces were created for those that have difficulty traveling on foot for greater than average/normal distances. Not for people that are able to travel normally without being in unbearable pain or discomfort.

I've had heart and breathing problems, yet, still walked several hundred feet from parking spaces to the stores. I'm not dead and don't see a reason why I need special treatment to be able to park right in front of the store.

Read post 38, it contains our states reasons for handicap placard. My knees are bone on bone. I walk fairly normal, but with a lot of pain. I don't "look" handicapped. My Doctor told me he wanted me to use it. My knees are like miles on an engine, needs to be replaced but they want to coax all the miles they can get. If I get a knee replacement now it probably won't last because I am young. Sure there is some abuse, and karma sucks for them. But questioning someone's handicap based on the car they drive is ridiculous.

Same reason they wanted my wife to get one. She refused because of being so young and in need of a knee replacement. She ended up with the replacement last anyhow.
