I think Ford did a great job of incorporating some features that I'm sure a lot of current mustang owners will hate about the car, like the IRS, the steering wheel, the added width of the car...all noted features that were new to the 5th Gen Camaro. It's funny they didn't mention the weight of the car, I bet they (mustang owners) are now going to hear about what a "fat pig" this car is when the numbers roll out.

My fat boy and your fat boy
Sitting by the fire
My fat boy says to your fat boy
"I'm gonna set your fat on fire"

Real Lyric:
My flag boy and your flag boy
Sitting by the fire
My flag boy says to your flag boy
"I'm gonna set your flag on fire"

I guess that's why they are increasing the HP on the car to offset it Overall, it is a decent design. It's not unbearable to look at...except for the interior. Though much improved, it does seem to lack any kind of inspired styling. Some neat tech in it though with the push button start, I'm sure that will be the trend going forward with all automakers.

Being a New England resident, I found it amusing see Iacocca wearing a Red Sox hat who new?

I don't think the IRS will be a problem for most Mustang fans. Despite the success Ford has had tuning the live axle, we are sick of the 'truck axle' focus by the press. There appears to me to be more interest in the Boss cars on the track than the Cobra Jets on the strip. It's time for an IRS and we expect a damn good one.

For those who are seriously into drag racing, it looks like there will be a kit from Ford Racing to convert to solid axle.

Almost no one on Mustang6G is complaining about the steering wheel. What's the problem?

Lower, wider, lower seating, lower COG, better visibility than Camaro. What's not to like about that?

Besides possible embarrassment about a 'fat pig', I can think of three more likely reasons for not announcing final weight.
1. Waiting for the F-150 announcement. Ford's big dog will be announced at the Detroit AS and it's big story for 2014 will be its weight loss. Approx. 700lb. I suspect the Mustang's weight loss will be announced after the F150 so not to steal any thunder. I just can't imagine Ford wanting to announce a weight gain on the Mustang after announcing a 700 lb weight loss on the F150. Ain't going to happen.
2. Sitting in the bushes as long as possible while Team Camaro finalizes plans for Camaro6G. If the Mustang's weight turns out to be less than the expected Camaro6G, then sending Oppi back to the drawing board later rather than earlier would be a good thing for Ford.
3. They don't know yet. They are still in pre-production. Not all production parts are available as yet.

Right off I have to question why we (collectively as enthusiasts) are letting ourselves and our opinions get led around by the nose by the automotive press and what they feel they have to say in order to 'sound relevant and current'.

It won't be a problem if they get the IRS right, but if they don't and simply 'having IRS' is taken as "improvement by definition" I'm afraid it'll be the SN95 IRS story all over again.

I am NOT arguing this from a drag racer's point of view. My avatar shows my outlook better than I could type the words to.

Road & Track's article (February 2014) mentions Ford brass listing Porsche's 911 and BMW's M3 as benchmarks. Performance-wise, that's fine. But let's have that happen without dragging in all of the thumb-on-nose snob-appeal along with it, else what path do you suppose the Camaro would follow?

Fantastic video and a good quick history lesson on the mustang. I do hope this car is successful for Ford and the history of this legendary car name the mustang.

How did Mustang #00001 end up in St. John's Newfoundland?

The story goes that Ford decided that ALL Ford dealers in North America would have at least one Mustang for display by 4/17/64, Announcement Day. This meant the logistics would require the furthest dealers would have their cars shipped earliest. Number 00001 went to the furthest point, east, in North America, St. John's. The furthest point, west, at that time was Alaska, and that's where Number 00002 went (Anchorage, I believe).

The purchaser of Number 1 was a pilot who, when Ford realized the historical significance of 00001, was offered the 1,000,000th Mustang in exchange for 00001.

I wonder what the 1,000,000th one is worth, today, and if it survives? Probably not quite as many Loonies as Serial Number 00001, eh b'y? I 'spect Ron Pratte would pay a LOT more for ol' 00001.

I am hitting the NAIAS on the 18th, I am hoping they have some more info then. I also want to see one in person so I can really get a feel for the new design. I was so/so on the new Corvette until I saw it in person at the show, and then I knew that GM had hit a homerun.

It looks to me like they took a BRZ and grafted a Fusion front end on it. Then they took a Mustang tail light panel, leaned it forward, grafted it on the back, and called it a day. Definitely not the home run in the styling department that I was expecting. I thought that after taking 5 years of showroom drubbing over styling, they would do something dramatic.

Was going to start a new thread but maybe someone else will...
However looked at Motor Trend and saw and estimate weight for the mustang of 3450-3800ibs.

The current one weights what?

3500 for the base sixxer coupe
3600 GT coupe &
3850 GT500 coupe

So yeah. If nothing was lost, might be the case, than yeah that'd be about right.

But Ford rumors said it would lose 200-300 lbs. when in development. These guesses by Motor Trend would suggest otherwise. Ford, for whatever reason in the midst of all the reveal hype, mentioned word-ZERO about weight. hmmm.

If the GT500 engine is briefly carried over, as some rumors suggest, to be closely followed by a TT-V8, again as rumors suggest, getting a car with a larger shadow than the current one to weigh appreciably less (while including a HD IRS) will be a challenge. It will be challenging enough on the bottom end of the scale (Base-V6 and T-4), let alone with the more robust drivetrain always required with the V8s.

I kinda like it....I am very interested in seeing what the GT 350 dies when it comes out. If it stays NA and pushes high 400's hp/tq . It will be a bad dude.

Actually from what I've read on sites like svtp, the 350 should push 500hp+ from an NA 5.2, coyote/roadrunner based motor. Weight numbers are still up in the air, however, I'd say that it's more likely due to finalizing numbers on an actual production car rather than a prototype. Materials and components can vary quite a bit between prototype and production cars.
