It's interesting to read people complain about how the schools are out of control when it's the parents that have taken away a school's ability to discipline their children. And other's say that retaliation is bad because one never knows who might be armed. But when you read about a school shooting...it's rarely the bully that picked up the gun...it's usually the victim who felt persecuted...yet that fact hasn't managed to deter the bullies.

It's important for people to realize that boys and girls tend to internalize things differently. That's why the majority of school shootings are carried out by boys while the majority of teen suicides are committed by girls. So what might be good advice in one circumstance won't work at all in another. And unfortunately, bullying has never been just a school problem...it's a life problem...so teaching young people better coping skills is always the best answer.

I hope your granddaughter is able to get the help she needs and with the right support will eventually come to realize that nobody else can define who or what she is.

Nuttbutt - one of our Camaro5 members' daughter (95birdible) posted this video on YouTube when she was being bullied. It quickly went viral, got some news coverage and more. I think she was 12 when she made this.

Maybe your granddaughter will watch this and it helps.

First off, sorry to hear this, it pisses me off.

This is why I would be for banning all of these electronic devices with such features as texting, tweet, instagrams, social media, etc.

In the 80's when I was a kid if there were bullies all you had to do is stay out of their physical path. With these devices, these bullies pretty much enter your home into your children's devices. You can be tracked everywhere you exist. I hate all the I-phone, texting stuff, but then again I am an old fart.

The sad thing is that it's only going to get worse as time and technology grows on.

That's so true! When we were kids, we didn't have Internet to solvew our problems or make problems to someone. We knew how to deal with interpersonal stuff. I think that modern kids have serious problems with communication patterns.

This whole subject and problem is one of the many Ive not looked forward to dealing with as my kids age. My boy just turned 9 and its now the beginning. Ive always been honest and open with my kids, teaching them respect and to hold and grasp a moral compass that has been eroded away over many years. My son has no phone or computer and will not anytime soon. He plays a few video games that I have allowed him to play which dont contain any violence that is beyond what one would see during an 80"s cartoon. When he's bad he gets punished, whether it be something he likes taken away or a good ole fashioned butt spanking. Point is Im being a parent, taking the time I should to do what I should. Society's problem is parents dont wanna parent. They prefer to just be friends instead, allowing the kids to rule the roost and do whatever they want. It dont work that way. Life is nothing but consequences for ones actions. When parents dont teach and make there kids know there are consequences for each of ther actions then kids think they can do whatever they want.

Angrybird I hope the situation with your granddaughter works out for the best and maybe both parties learn some lessons in this. Im sure it will take some time for her to come around again and when she does , she becomes a better and stronger little girl. My thoughts and prayers to you and the family for a positive outcome

Pipe, I know we can raise our kids to be exactly what we would like, unfortunately we cannot control what they encounter in the real world, peer pressure on a preteen is one of the things you must tell your child not to be influenced by. It will be tough, but make sure they know you are there for them and will always take the time to listen, no matter how small a problem you may think it is it may be world shattering to them.
It's hard enough as adults for us to know who to trust, and kids choices are even tougher.

This is sad. I can relate to what she is going through. The difference is how the hate is delivered. Back when I was is high school the message was usually delivered face to face. These day's kids can show their cowardice by hiding behind a keyboard. We never had any support from anyone back then, now that there is a recognized problem there is counseling available. This was not something I could talk to my parents about so angrybird, be thankful she was able to talk to someone. That time of my live molded my personality and my confidence, altering what I was to accomplish in life and who I was to become. People ask me why I never go to my class reunions. My reply is that I didn't like those people very much then, I probably won't like them much more now.

Angrybird, keep her close, let her know you are there for her, and get her the professional help she needs. She will be ok, most of us are.

Yeah it's totally different now. You always knew who the bullys were. You could avoid contact with them most of the time but sometimes it was unavoidable.
You know we have seen Internet bullys even on this forum. Unfortunately they hide behind their screen name and only when they get banned do we see any relief. Then they go on other Forums and bash the same people and the mods here because they were banned. They were never taught people social skills as a child and were probably a bully growing up too. At least we can report them on here. I know I have helped get a few banned myself. And I have gotten warnings when I stepped over the line in my dealings with them. But I try to learn from my mistakes. I just wish we could get along and not try to push others buttons.

There was an incident today in a local school. I believe in this incident the threat was made by the girl that was being Bullyed and a friend of hers. Here is the news report on it.

From WJHL-TV11 news:
A soft lockdown at Gate City middle and high schools is over after two high school students threatened to kill another student on Facebook.

The lockdown was lifted just after 11:00 a.m. Friday.

According to the Scott County Sheriff John Puckett, officers learned two Gate City High School students threatened to shoot another student on Facebook.

Both students who made the threat, a teenage girl and boy, are in custody and charges are pending

The sheriff says the boy confessed he would help the female kill another student. A motive is still unclear, but Sheriff Puckett believes it has to do with bullying.

Puckett says the state police's canine unit cleared the high school and is working to clear the middle school.

The school system will operate on a normal schedule today, but law enforcement will remain on school grounds throughout the day as a precaution.

Parents can take their kids out of school if they want to.

Previous story

Friday morning, Gate City Middle and High Schools, Schumaker Elementary, and the Scott County Career andTechnical School were placed on a soft lockdown.

"There was an indirect threat made by two students against another individual at GCHS. The incident is currently under investigation by VSP and local law enforcement. There have been many stories circulating on social media, but the individuals involved have been identified and charges are pending and these individuals no longer have access to our school grounds," Greg Ervin, Gate City High School Principal.

Under a soft lockdown, students can move freely throughout the building, but they cannot leave the building.

"Any potential threat has been addressed and the school has been cleared by the state police K-9 unit. While we understand the concern of parents when a threat is made, we currently have additional law enforcement officers on school grounds throughout the school day as a precaution. We will continue to operate on a normal schedule," said Principal Ervin.

I read parts of Jesse Ventura's book a while back, can't remember the title, but it proposed having a non-uniformed security type staff in the building at all time. This staff would be fully trained in non-lethal tactics, and armed with, among other things, a firearm. No one would know who this person was, expect the superintendent and the principal. They would blend in as a janitor/maintanence person or even office staff. Should an incident arise where someone brings a firearm into the school there would be a trained professional who can subdue the person, hopefully without shots, long before the police arrive, potentially saving most, if not all of the possible victims of a shooting.

Sad day when something like that is needed.

...So the moral of the story is don't threaten retaliation, you will get into as much or more trouble...

Hope the threats your grand-daughter received are taken as seriously as the one's from the girl who was bullied, and threatened retaliation...

I was guessing it was for retaliation, I am not positive. Anyway either one should not be tolerated.

Yeah the two making the threats were doing it over someone that was bullying.

Quote:
Two Gate City High School Students are charged with conspiring to commit murder after the sheriff says they threatened to kill another student on Facebook.
The school, along with a few neighboring ones, was on lockdown for most of Friday morning as officers searched for a gun.

Scott County sheriff John Puckett tells us two students -- a 17 year-old-boy and 16-year-old girl -- posted comments on Facebook Thursday night that they were going to shoot and kill another student over bullying comments. "It started over some remarks that somebody was fat and ugly, or something, and a little bullying," said Sheriff Puckett.

"The male was going to lure another male to a set of steps and the female was going to shoot the male that was making bad remarks to him," says Sheriff Puckett.
