Cyber bullying of My Step Granddaughter

We found out yesterday that my wife's granddaughter has been being Cyber Bullyed from some girls at her School. According to a new Tennessee Law anyone found to be Cyberbullying can be prosecuted. Minors can be sentenced to 30 days Community Service, and adults can serve up to a year in prison and or up to a $250,000 fine.
I won't go into all the details of what was said but one student said if she reports her that she would kill her. Another one said she was so ugly that nobody will ever love her so she better kill herself now. This has been going on since last school year but she was too afraid to tell anyone until now.
These type threats are against the law, they have been reported to the principle, and the police. The police are going to get a warrant to have the internet provider turn over all records of thie IP addresses these messages have been coming from.
This crap needs to be stopped. I am so pissed off right now, I am afraid of what her dad might do when he finds out who is behind this.

Talk to your kids and let them know that nobody should be allowed to bully someone on the Internet or through text messaging. It's against the law in many places and they are cracking down on it. If your child is being Bullyed they need to know they can report it. If your child is bullying someone then they need to know they can get in a lot of trouble if and when they are caught.

I was a victim of cyber bullying back in the late 90s, before anyone knew about any of this crap. We found out who the person was by the IP address. The cops, made my parents, and the kids parents, and us meet and talk to out. I know it isn't that simple anymore, but the kids that were bullying me ended up being my really good friends through HS and college.

I really feel for kids these days. The internet doesn't make there lives any easier.

Also I would like to state that we need to stop cyber bullying now when they are teens. My work is dealing with cyber bully right now, really we are adults in the professional field. :eyeroll:

Good luck to your granddaughter, she will come out a stronger and better person once she gets through this.

There are programs out there that will store and send all information to a selected e-mail addy. I can't remember the name we have on our phones. Works like a charm and can be set to auto archive.
I'd hope you would only refer to her as your granddaughter, that "step" stuff should be a thing of the past.

My daughter is 12 and you would not believe the "clicks" in her school....

I really feel for your granddaughter. This is something I worry about a lot with my own kid. That's a very hard thing to fight these days without making it worse for the kid.

Not to bring up the gun fight, but every time a kid goes on a shooting rampage they want to take every ones guns away instead of figuring out and fixing why kids want to do this so much these days. I think bullying has a lot to do with this type of actions along with suicide among kids. My are kids so nasty these days? It also seems to be more with girls than boys anymore.

What do kids expect when they put all their personal business on Facebook for the world to see. Just tell her to delete facebook account and move on...

Cyber bullying and being bullied in school are completely different.

Kid started picking on me in middle school because my parents couldn't afford $100 sneakers for all 4 kids. Kept getting in my face in front of everyone in the lunch room and pushing me THINKING he could do it.

I punched that kid in the face and pushed him over a bench in the middle of lunch. Principal said he was glad I stood up for myself and gave the bully suspension.

He never messed with me again and my parents bought me a new pair of shoes the next day lol.

I've been in this rodeo not too long ago, in another thread. lol not doing it again, but i will say, i think getting the law involved and 30 day community service will teach a lot of kids to stop. Most kids are stupid, and don't realize what they are doing is against the law and can get them in deep doo doo. I know not everyone will learn their lesson, and fighting sometimes is the only way, but not always needed.

in today's age, what will happen is the bully's parents will see their perfect child will have a broken nose or black eye, and sue the parents of the person being bullied. i was always taught not to start a fight. words is not an excuse to hit someone. very different world we live in now.

and honestly, if the parents don't do anything, after their kid is serving 30 days community service for bullying, they deserve to get punched in the face. lol

Often times, when a kid is bullied, they end up becoming a bully as well. Even if they fight back, things don't change. I see it with my family. Can't tell you how many times he was suspended from school for fighting back. Eventually the police did get involved. The kid started bullying younger, smaller kids and was charged with robbery (stealing a younger kids Halloween candy and punching him in the process) - severe charges. He went through the system and although he received a conditional discharge based on behavior in the almost year later, he now has a record until he's 21. Has it changed his response to how he's treated? Ya, he doesn't go out anymore, has low self esteem, all because he has for years been the victim of bullying.

The point is the bullying needs to stop. So Mary punches Sally in the face. Sally just moves on to the next kid. Problem now moves to someone else.

Kids who are bullying need stronger consequences. Police get involved, kid gets charged, ends up with a record, community service, curfews etc. You really think the other kids will still think Sally is "cool"? Not likely.

Op, I hope your school and police do the right thing and treat it with respect it deserves. I hope your granddaughter stands proud for finally speaking up and getting some help. Many kids don't and chose drugs, alcohol to cope or ultimately suicide.
