Not to get in the middle of the sand throwing but if the new camaro is going on the alpha platform then GM will/should have the advantage since its already in production. I don't think that ford has said what platform the mustang will be on so that technically it makes them "behind" but I'm sure it won't matter to much when the car is built seeing how awesome the current 5.0 is minus the tranny issues.

Let me start off by saying that I don't really know if a liter does anything to add power, but I would think it does. So by my logic, a V8 6.1 engine would generate A LOT more power than a V8 5.0 engine. But then again, I don't know much about engines....

Displacement doesn't matter as much anymore as much as the technology that goes into it. It's just two different ways of accomplishing the same end result. The 5.0 is "smaller" in displacement, but the fact that it has dual over head cams allows it make similar power to the LS series of engines with slightly higher displacement. The LS engines, due to being over head valve design/push rod, typically make better low end torque, are easier to work on, and while having larger displacement are packaged a lot easier due to being dimensionally smaller then the DOHC Ford engines, which are very wide by design. The LS engines also weigh a bit less then the Ford MOD motors. Both have their pros and cons, both have a great after market, and both are very efficient and very reliable. The LS series, while being an "older" push rod design, is quite advanced, and even more so with the upcoming LT1 engine and all the tech that is packed into it.

Im pretty sure a lot of GM fans will be disapointed...I guess 456hp max. No way a 450hp estimated is gonna end up in a 480hp final numbers.

![]() I didn't know the s550 was the chassis honestly I thought it was going to be a model/trim my bad. Even though my point still stands the alpha chassis is already in production so GM should have it sorted out by the time the new camaro comes around, I HOPE.

It has to. Plus, Ford would be gaining 50hp with DI where GM would only be getting 20hp with DI. That doesn't make any sense, so I think GM low-balled the numbers.

475 hp would be awesome if they can get there. Direct injection is definitely coming in 2015. (It should have come in 2011...all the engineering work was already done back then). It is also generally believed that the 412hp rating in 2011 was on the conservative side as well, as stock 5.0s typically put down around 365-370 rwhp.
To be honest, though, I'd rather have them go the route Chevy did with the LT1, and focus more on gaining lower-end torque than on their top end horsepower number. Quote:

But the Mustang survived because it was honestly a better car. I know, I had a 4th gen...but even with all of it's short comings it was still the one I bought because it had an LS1 lolQuote:

For power #s I would expect the Camaro and Mustang to be within 10-15hp of each other. Chevrolet will have the benefit of launching the next generation slightly later, or so it seems. I expect whoever is topped will come out with an update soon after to match or get close. |
