Aside from a replacement vin, I would probably advise you to steer clear of it. First and foremost I think it wouldn't do good things to the value having a replacement vin.

My car TA is out of state titled, and I have to take it into the BMV for them to look at the vin and match it to the title.

We're not really worried about value. We want to buy it to spend time together, and it's something he's wanted for a very long time. Money is just paper.

I'm gonna go look at the car again tomorrow. Fingers crossed that we find something. Whether it be on the car or on paper.
Just for consideration:

Did the shop really remove the VIN plate? or did they remove the body tag, which also has the VIN?

I have a classic car that has a VIN tag on the dash, and the body tag on the cowl

They might have removed the body tag.

What year is your car?

I'm going to look at it today.

Is it this exact car he's wanting? A project car is A LOT of money. Just make sure you aren't literally throwing money away. Before you buy it, make the seller get a replacement vin, it may take months to get, but if he can't get it, then at least you aren't left with a hunk of metal.

Now for the vin and the other plate.
My Trans Am has a VIN on the dash, bottom of the windshield. It also has a cowl tag with a partial vin on the cowl.

My dad's corvette has a Vin on the on the pillar, and a tag in the door jam too.
In reality it doesn't really matter if you don't have a cowl tag. Sure, it isn't going to be worth as much, but it's not really considered crucial. What you need is the whole vin in it's factory location.

Yes. This is the car he wants.

It's not really a bare bone project car. It runs, it looks good, it just needs some work.

I'm going to call the DMV tomorrow and see what our options are. I'm hoping up flying is correct about his info.

The car does not have a vin on the dash or windshield. It had one on the left door hinge pillar, but it was removed during a paint job.

Oh, it's my '70. Not even a Ford. It would be mere chance if the two tags were in the same spot as mine

I would suggest the following places to look for a hidden vin.

both frame rails particularly under the firewall area
on the firewall itself
glovebox
engine crossmember
possibly partial vin on the inner front fenderwells

Alright guys. I drove out to see the car again with my dad today. Needless to say, we're in love with this car.

I crawled under the car to see if I could see any numbers, but couldn't finagle my way to see the top of the frame due to the car being so low.

We're going to call the DMV first thing tomorrow to see what they can do.

Thanks. I just texted my dad telling him to call the seller and tell him to look in these spots. Fingers crossed.

If we end up getting this vin problem straightened out, I'm taking everyone who helped out to eat one day.

As much as I hate to say it.. There really is no active Edsel forum due to there being such a low number of them left.

I figured I'd have a better chance asking on C5 than an abandoned Edsel forum.

There's only a fraction of the total number of Edsels produced that survived to this day. Maybe around 10k or so.

I know there's only around 500 1958 Edsel Corsair 2-door hardtops left in the world.

Got any pictures of this?

Hope it all works out for you. The sounds like a really interesting project. You would certainly have something no one else would have at the car shows.
