... Ford has no choice... the current truck-based V6 in the base Mustang is nothing to write home about in either power or fuel economy. The V8 is reaching the end of it's run as well. With the introduction of the Camaro, they have no other choice if they're going to attempt to compete... more power and (they had better add) more gears...

Ford should model their 5.0 after this...

I know quoting wiki FTL, but.
Quote:
For the powertrain detail of this latest RS6, the engine (parts code: 07L, identification code: BHU) is what Audi claims the first all-aluminium alloy 5.0 litre (4,991 cc (304.6 cu in)) 90° V10 twin-turbocharged ("biturbo"), Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), with a dry sump lubrication system. It has four valves per cylinder, with twin chain-driven double overhead camshafts, and variable valve timing for both inlet and exhaust camshafts. Charged intake air is cooled with two side-mounted intercoolers (SMIC)s. The V10 engine produces a maximum power output of 426 kilowatts (579 PS; 571 bhp) at 6,250 to 6,700 rpm, and 650 newton metres (479 ft·lbf) of torque from 1,500 to 6,250 rpm. Engine management is by way of two Bosch Motronic ME 9.1.2 engine control units, which act as "master" and "slave" concepts, due to the high revs the engine can achieve. It also uses mapped direct ignition with ten individual spark coils, an electronic drive by wire throttle (Bosch "E-Gas"), cylinder-selective knock control, and cylinder bank adaptive lambda control, utilising eight lambda sensors.
I know the ford engine wouldn't be anywhere near 571hp but it might put it safely in the 500's. A DI TT 5.0 V8?

Great to see that Ford is making improvements. Surely brought on by their competition from the Camaro. Even still, it's a little late.

I'd hate to be one of the people who bought the 2010 mustang with the new body, only to find out they have a new, more powerful engine for probably about the same price only one year later!
You thought the V6 mustang which is 400lbs lighter than your Camaro felt heavy?

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

Actually, it's a very smart choice. Putting the EcoBoost in the V6 Mustang will up the price, and that's not the point of a V6 Mustang. It's supposed to be affordable, not fast.

On the money. Shelby is apparently seriously considering a 3.5L Ecoboost powered GT350 to be built at his facility in Vegas. I'm certain such a car would be seriously tweaked compared to a run of the mill EB 3.5L, but the reasons why Ford wont do it remain the same.

Primarily? A 3.5L EB V6 absolutely cost more to build than the 5.0L V8, and makes less power.

However the camaro will still look a lot nicer on the road stock for stock..
The Mustang won't weigh that much less once Ford get's around to putting in the required 2012 safety requirements which the Camaro already has. Don't be surprised if there is less then 100 pounds difference between the two once this happens.

im not so sure about that. v6 to v6 there will be a noticable difference in weight even if there is added weight for 2012, which hasn't been quantified at all. so far imo there have just been speculative qualitative statements regarding that; none from official sources

but how will the new V6 mustang handle ? yes the v8 hangs with our V8 but thats because of weight. The camaro V6 is very well under weight of the V8's numbers and has been said to be the car for handeling.

Well the GT is already right on the heels of the SS thanks to its far more reasonable weight. With the new engines, I really do think it will easily outperform the Camaro trim level for trim level. GM really put themselves at a big disadvantage with the weight. We mocked the Mustang for its antiquated mechanicals, but Ford did a great job maximizing what they had and getting everything else right, and now that they have modern mechanicals they'll be number 1, no doubt about it. The only thing the Camaro will have on it will be the styling.

They are working on a DI TT 5.0L V8 according to pickuptrucks.com. It is called Bobcat and appears to be aimed at becoming the top engine in the F series, but it would make a pretty good GT500 power plant with a projected 500hp & 750+ ft/lbs.

Of course it requires both gas and E85 (in separate tanks) and will probably have wet sump, a single front mounted intercooler and perhaps an iron block. But a bobcat powered GT500 is sure to cost less a lot less than anything Audi will put that V10 in.
