The Volt is a good first try, and may one day be a good alternative, but it is only a good deal to those with poor math skills.

While I mentioned above I think that the purchase price on this car is too high, although there are attractive lease rates on the Volt now, $249.00 mo, $1980.00 down, 24-months.
Another option is the Prius discounted to $23,000 0.9% financing, this car gets 51-mpg in the city, more than triple what my Ram sees. How would a license plate frame saying "My Other Car Is A SRT8 Challenger" look in the back of the above cars

.....But will spend multiple thousands of dollars with no real thought.....
Someone said earlier, the Volt is for folks that failed math class :-) ..... (My addition) or for folks that will spend money to hug a tree. The average person in rural America will never be out of the hole with a Volt, I suppose some of the folks that live in a city may have a commute short enough to work, but that's the exception and not the rule. With a car like the Cruze, I can run my 500 miles per two week pay period on a single tank of fuel, fill up for about $50 twice a month, and make my $140 lease payment. In two years, if the diesel is out on the market, I'll jump at that. Run math on the cost of ownership, I don't know what the lease payment deals are on the Volt currently, but I can also buy out my 1LT/RS Cruze for $17,xxx at the end of the 24 month and 30,000 miles lease, or walk away. My maintenance costs are $0.00 under dealership agreement, and the car gets detailed and waxed/sealed every 6 months until lease end. I make a payment and add fuel now and again. Very low cost to have and use. (Note: I did put $2,000 down to reduce the lease payment) Sent from my Galaxy S3 using smack-a-talk |

I don't own a volt and no nothing about it but dosent it take a lot of electricity to charge? So higher electrical bill would compensate for the money not spent on gas? I could completley wrong just throwing the idea out there

Doesn't increase your electric bill much at all.

Ok, although I have posted that the Volt "can" pay for itself if you have a charging station at work and you drive the max EV range on your commute one way.
But that isn't what the Volt is about. It's about choice. If you want to choose to be in EV mode and NOT use gas you can. For some folks that is important. It's also about technology. Some people will simply pay a premium for the technology. You can always pull the MATH out. Heck I can show math that if you buy repeated $500 beaters you can be cheaper in the long run if you simply pick well and drive them until they need some type of repair and then simply abandon the car and buy another $500 beater. It was never about the math.
