Corvette getting new manual!
Looks like the vette is getting a 7-speed. Like most of it's goods we can only hope it'll trickle down to the Camaro.
![]() From Autoblog Perhaps the manual transmission isn't as dead as a few Italian automakers would like you to believe. Porsche has declared that as long as there is demand it will continue to supply automobiles with do-it-yourself gearboxes, and the German automaker has outfitted its 2012 911 with a seven-speed manual gearbox. Now it seems General Motors is following suit, and the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette will reportedly offer up seven forward gears, as well. Inside Line has reported that the 2014 Corvette is set to swap in an extra cog for increased fuel efficiency. As a bonus, this move will allow engineers to play with the lower gear ratios thus providing a bit more speed from the lower end. Now that Porsche has made the leap to a seven-speed manual and Corvette is following suit, could a cackling, wild-eyed locked-in-the-basement transmission engineer be working on an eight-speed unit? We doubt it, but we're already doing heavy shoulder workouts just in case. http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/26/n...ed-manual-too/

At some point, it's just too much. I miss my old 4 speed Z28.

I don't know. If a 62 speed transmission is what it takes to keep V8's around an mpg's high I'm ok with that.

i understand the attraction of a 7 speed for the new Porsches because they have no torque. what does the corvette need it for? they don't need to be geared any shorter than they already are and 6th gear is already ridiculously tall. unless the next gen engines are significantly less torquey (doubtful) i just don't see it.

I thought this was common knowledge already. C7 vette gets 7 speed manual and 8 speed auto transmissions.
edit: probably a shorter 6th gear making room for a taller 7th. |

A C7 drive train mule was spotted a few days ago. The photographer said it sounded more like a Ferrari than a traditional Vette.

That I know of there is no "Common knowledge" outside of GM (and they are not talking). Everything is just speculation at this point... People that are in the know do not usually speak... "Inside Line has learned that the 2014 C7 Chevrolet Corvette will be available with a seven-speed manual transmission. Although not confirmed officially by Chevrolet, a source with knowledge of the C7 project confirmed that the upcoming Corvette will offer a seven-speed manual transmission." 7 speeds is starting to be too many, particularly if you have to shift through them all manually. I already skip gears on may car (to save shifting, not because of the skip-shift feature). I hope this isn't foreshadowing future engine choices. If I wanted a torqueless engine that needed granny gears and 8-9K RPM to do anything, I'd have bought a Honda. That is great for race cars, but cars that are driven on public roads need torque much more than they need horsepower.I've driven many cars with newer, high horsepower V6s. They prove that there is no replacement for displacement. I don't care if it does have 300+ horsepower, if it is constantly bogged down because it as no torque, but is geared as if it does, it is going to "feel" like a 100hp economy car most of the time, regardless of its horsepower rating. By the way, what is the shift pattern going to look like with 7 forward speeds? 6 gears already fills up the H.

I'm thinking they'll do like they did with a 5 speed 1357 246R wouldn't be surprised if Porsche did it this way though R1357 ..246 they always put reverse on the wrong side..... great for backing up when you want to go forward ![]()
