I have yet to find anything definitive on VW though.
I've always heard that Dodge used some kind of rare earth or precious metal catalyst, basically trading upfront cost for lower maintenance.

The emission credit thing is interesting, though. Does that mean Dodge will need urea after 2013?

I can tell you diesel won't catch on here like elsewhere until they can control the noxious smell better. I can smell that shit like 10 mins after one goes by...

The VW TDI is very clean in both tailpipe particulate and odor tho...

I thought the next huge thing for diesels was gonna be ceramic coated heads, valves, piston tops and a ceramic cat?

With a manual trans. The Eco auto isn't much better than the standard cruze. I may get a used 1LT in a year or a new Sonic. A diesel has me interested enough to possibly wait.

2012 1.4T/Auto models all got a 2 MPG bump, so the ECO Auto now does 39 MPG. Still pretty damn good.

Mrs Scrappy regulary gets 37-39 mpg in her 36 mpg highwat rated 2011 cruze. Auto/1.4. I can only assume that the 2012 will do better than that.

I know a guy who is thinking of starting up a emissions credit company. This is a really smart guy who knows how to make emissions credit certificates for 1/3 the cost of the ones everyone is buying now. He thinks he can sell them for half of what you pay now and still make a profit!

Once free market competition from other producers become available, he predicts that the price of carbon credits will be roughly the price of the paper they are printed on (or less!).

Once low cost credits hit the market, you should see a lot more automotive choices on your dealer's lot!

Would be awesome if there were better infrastructure to support it... There are also retrofit costs associated with that and it returns less mpg on average...

Infrastructure? You can make it yourself out of used cooking oil and a few other ingredients.

Yup. But most places will not give/sell you the used oil. Some BS about regulations stating it has to be picked up by/disposed of by a registered company blah blah blah.

And while I would have no problem "mixing" up a batch, you think the general public is gonna want to/be able to? Not on your life!

Therefore, for it to catch on, there needs to be infrastructure. Similar to electric charging stations for the EV's out there....but even more so.

I hope these diesels spread to other platforms. I'd love to see GM making a big move in this direction.
