GM Confirms Chevrolet Cruze Diesel for NA, CY 2013

Chevrolet Confirms Diesel Variant for Cruze in 2013
Link to Press Release

July 22, 2011

Quote:
DETROIT – Chevrolet confirmed today it will add a diesel variant to the Cruze lineup in North America in calendar year 2013. Diesel versions of the Cruze are currently being sold in Europe. Additional details on the Cruze diesel for North American markets will be released at a later date.

The diesel will bolster the already fuel-efficient Cruze lineup. Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Cruze recorded a total of 24,896 sales in the United States in June, the fifth consecutive month sales have exceeded 20,000. The success of the Cruze has increased Chevrolet’s total share of the compact-car segment from 9.5 percent a year ago to 11.9 percent for the first five months of 2011, even as the segment size grew 19 percent.

It'll probably use the 2.0L turbocharged common rail diesel.

Not sure yet. Part of the long development time until launch is to get that engine compliant with US emissions.

This has me interested. Why can't they roll that out in 2012. I need a fuel efficient car soon.

I doubt it. Dodge has figured out how to make their HD trucks crank out hundreds of hp (and twice the torque) without after treatment. Surely GM can figure out how to do it with an engine with 1/3 the output. I don't think VW uses urea for their small diesels either.

Uhhhhh, exhaust gas fluid? Is that like head lamp fluid?

It is actualy urea injection. Yep it's exactly that. We call if DEF or Diesel Emission Fluid. It reduces NOx emissions.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, need a link to that. Any diesel in order to meet US standards requires DPF, Diesel Particulate Filter and as mentioned above, DEF. No real way around this. It's why we don't have more diesels in the U.S. Emissions standards for diesels are wayyyyy more stringent than Europe. Even the flawless MB uses aftertreatment as described above in their Bluetech. Not saying you are wrong, DG, it would just take a lot to have a diesel in the U.S. without aftertreatment that meets 2011 emissions standards. Urea is pretty much a given for 2011 and later.

It's about damn time. Diesels are the wave of the future. Time for the Americans to do what VW has been doing for decades.

If they do use a 2.0L diesel as someone earlier mentioned, I will predict that it will actually have better performance numbers than the gas engines as well (just as VW's 2.0 diesel outperforms the 2.5L gas engine in the same cars as well).

Looks like I am wrong, yet still somewhat right. I knew that the Ram didn't need urea, so I assumed it was because the cummins somehow managed to create minimal NOx without after-treatment. Turns out that they're using a loophole. While the big Ram doesn't need urea, its not because the cummins is super clean. They've banked a bunch of emissions credits and plan on using them for the next couple of years (till 2013)

I have yet to find anything definitive on VW though.
