New tires fail just as easy as recaps. Most recaps fail because they are under inflated. I oversee the maintenance of 400 trucks and if I had to purchase virgin tires we would go broke. In the trash business you dont wear tires out you ruin them.

Also it is Not illegal to run recaps on a steer axle unless it is a bus. This is the one wheel position that I will always spend the extra money on a quality virgin tire.

One blew right in front of me today on the highway! Luckily, no one was beside me and I darted over two lanes to miss it all

I understand your point and the potential financial pain. But we cannot continue killing people because these tires are cheaper.

I believe the additional cost needs to be added as normal business expense and the cost of service adjusted accordingly.

As for new tires - when new tires fail they do not leave a 3-6 foot chunk of death on the highway.

Maybe if we mandated regular inspections on retread tires at wiegh stations and mandated a very heavy fine on retread separation at the next inspection station the problem would be solved?

Pretty dramatic, you should be a writer

Trucks are already inspected quite well, thanks for the suggestion for more red tape...

More people are killed by drunk driving... driving while texting... street racing... pick your poison ladies. If you get tagged by a FLYING tread that's one thing, if you hit a tread on the highway YOU WERE FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE, OR NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS! hang up your phone and pay attention.

Well stated counter points. Respect to you.

But saying that it's the driver fault they just slammed into a chunk of steel cords and rubber thrown down by a semi is like blaming the blind folded guy for not moving out of the way during the firing squad.

Ps - I find it difficult to believe a virgin tire will fail and somehow provide shrapnel larger than a dollar bill. I suppose it's possible, I just dont see how. Conversely i see it as almost impossible that a retread could fail and not leave a very large obstruction in the roadway.

At night, I agree, during the day, you weren't paying attention or following too close. I watched one car after another drive over an obstacle in the road just a couple of days ago, makes you wonder where their mind is.

Give it a try... throw a dead raccoon (cat, dog, pig, whatever's handy) in the road where people can see it from half a mile away... just about every one of them will run right over it, even if they can go around it.

American drivers are (mostly)under trained, over confident and inattentive.

Agreed, but what if you are on an 8 lane superslab and the truck throws the retread onto your car as you are carefully passing? Also, when hitting that dead animal we tossed onto the highway kills the occupants of the vehicle shouldn't you make it illegal to throw the dead animal into the highway?
