Best Classic muscle car to start with? - Page 3

Fox Body Mustang

Parts are still relatively cheap, the motor was pretty decent, you can drop an LS into it

, and it's one of the most popular/common cars used for drag racing in the muscle car realm...

If you have an opportunity to get any of the other cars listed on here, do it....but a Fox Body can be had relatively cheap.....and they are pretty idiot proof too

I dont think the OP was thinking fox body mustang when he posted this thread inquiring about classic muscle cars which has always been designated to 64-72 mid size cars. Sure the Fox is an affordable platform to go fast but its no classic muscle car. More like a modern classic like the Grand National.

True, which is why I started off the way I did...

There's not a single cheap or affordable platform for a 17 year old to get into from that era...and that's being realistic. Sure, you might find a deal...but its like a needle in a haystack...

70-72 Monte Carlo's are still plentiful and under $3,000 for good rust free drivers. I wanted a Chevelle but ended up with a 72 Monte Carlo and what's nice about the Monte is that it was considered the busniess mans muscle car due to all the standard equipment like the 350cid V8, 4 barrel carb, SS gauges, and 12 bolt posi rear end. Its basically a long wheel base Chevelle and all the suspension, glass and trunk lid are the same. All you need is a solid runner that you can fix while still driving it every day like a lot of us did when we were your age. You may even find a SS for $5k and those could be optioned out just like a Chevelle SS and get the 454 LS5 with buckets and 4 on the floor.

Here is mine when I picked it up for $3k during the muscle peak in 06. The previous owner just put in a rebuilt 350 engine and trans and full interior, all it needs is paint.

Bingo!!! That and the price of gas are the two main reasons kids buy rice.
I've actually seen 74-86 Vettes in need of TLC going for under $4000. That's always another option.

I paid $800 for my Monte Carlo SS 11 years ago. Not a muscle car but it has the correct DNA of sbc V8, RWD and full frame. It represents last of an era and is a distant cousin of the great Muscle car era of 64-72.
Lumina, Beretta and later Monte Carlo's were all FWD junk.
Consider saving a g-body if you are a 17 year old old looking to get into cars as a hobby.

My son and I built this '78 Camaro. He owned it for 12 years before he sold it to buy a 2011 1SS/RS. These rubber bumper gen 2 Camaros are heavy and slow but they have great style IMO. Still relatively cheap if you can find them.

What are you local emission laws because it would be foolish to buy a late 70's early 80's V8 if you want performance. Heck those FWD EFI junk models have more performance then those smog motors.

OP is from Wisconsin, no emission checks. Only smog nazi Ca is at war with older cars.

That's great, what year is the cutoff? or is it a free for all where you can have catless c5 zo6s with a LSX and a Hellion turbo and be 100% legal.
