The only reason gas mileage has improved at all in recent years has been government-mandated fuel-economy standards, and God knows some recent administrations did everything they could to frustrate those. The superefficient cars now on the drawing boards don't figure to be cheap, and unless gas prices skyrocket, the fuel savings probably won't cover the higher cost. Barring a sudden burst of altruism on the part of the car-buying public, chances are you won't see ultra-high-mileage cars for sale until we're down to the last two gallons of Arab oil.

I wouldn't say that its complacency, just the nature of engineering. The vast majority of the work is about making what already exists better, not creating something entirely new. Refining a technology isn't being complacent, it just doesn't grab anyones attention. You remember the one thing that gets a 10% improvement, but never the 10 little things that have a 1% improvement. So with a tweak to the design of a cam, to improved mapping of the throttle, to better spark plugs, it all contributes a little bit. Over the course of a decade or two, it can add up to a lot.

I wouldn't say "pissed"... I guess I would have to say I'm thrilled that we finally joined the rest of the world. Reading about the small / powerful / efficient engines available overseas, I've grumbled for many years while car shopping, "Why can't we get that from the Big 3?"
A heartfelt THANK YOU, Chevrolet for raising the bar and forcing us into the... well, the present.

Best fuel run I had in my Camaro was 17.75 MPG, not exactly hitting anywhere near he highway estimate. Currently I'm averaging 16.2 MPG over the 7,200 mile life of the car. But with that in mind I didn't buy my Camaro for fuel efficiency. I bought my Camaro because it has 400 hp at an MSRP of 33k and looks more bad ass than anything on the road. Performance cars with over 400 hp will probably never make 30 MPG unless its something different from an internal combustion engine like the Tesla or their is some real trick engineering that happens because of the CAFE rules changes. Mind you anything is better than the muscle car era when performance cars were averaging under 10 MPG. I dunno this is the reason why I have that weird little Fiesta, it does all the leg work at 39.1 MPG while the Camaro gets to go with me on the weekend.s

I was getting 26 mpg with my supra in 2003 and at that time it was making 560 rwhp. Last trip I got 29 with it and I now have over 800rwhp. I love my camaro but gas milage isn't as good as other high performance cars.
A model T gets 20 mpg. Lmao. |

I got 27 from Huntsville to Eufaula. Pretty nice to do that drive on less than a tank of gas.

My best was 30.7 mpg on a long all highway road trip doing a boring speed limit the whole way because the roads were super slick... Never again....
