Future Pontiac Solstice Variations

As I'm sure many of you know, there are rumors that the Solstice will be introduced in coupe and/or targa body styles by around 2009/10, along with a minor refresh. In fact Bob Lutz himself commented favorably on the possibility of a Solstice coupe. Now the hot rumor is that a targa variant will be offered, but sadly may be limited to 10,000 units per year. So lets hear your thoughts on it. Do these plans sound good? What do you speculate may be the price, the real production numbers, things to be changed in the refresh, availability of GXP levels on the new body styles. Talk amongst yourselves. Personally, if they offered a GXP Targa starting under the price of a GXP convertible, it would compete heavily against the Camaro in my book. As much as I want that V8 power and the convenience of a back seat, a cheaper, slick-looking, nimble two seat coupe would be pretty tempting.

no...the Solstice is a Roadster...make it coupe, if they so choose...but it's nowhere near Camaro, imo...Nor is it near the Vette, I think.


The folks looking for a functional sporty, every-day car...are not gonna go for a 2-seater solstice. The people looking for a V8 muscle car, are not going to go for a Solctice...

But it should be a quick, nice car, IMO... I've always liked the solstice, just could never see myself in one.

See, not having a family, and liking cars as small as possible, the solstice has a little more appeal for me. The lack on trunk space makes the convertible a no-go for me, because I like to road trip and I need the room for a decent sized duffel. Since my funds are rather limited, something cheaper than the Camaro, that still has a somewhat usable trunk, and is still sporty/track ready, plus a little more fuel efficient deserves a serious look. The Camaro is still my number one choice, but really what I want is a car I can commute in on weekdays and either race or roadtrip in on the weekends

Saturn Sky Red Line....all I have to say. Now, put a targa top on it. Oh my...

We saw the Red Line in Dallas. Holy heck, Batman. That was sweet. Sorry, love the Solstice, but I really love that Red Line.

don't know about the saturn. but my brief case won't even fit comfortably in a solstice. Pretty car though!

Oh, I'd take a Solstice. I love both of the versions. Now...would I fit. I sat in both, but both had the battery cables disconnected at the auto shows and the seats were pulled up. Didn't have enough leg room. If there was enough room, I'd take one.

I'm small, and my fiancee is tall but at the auto show she fit and she loved it. However, the complete lack of storage room means it could never really be more than a second car for the weekends, so that means the roadster is out. That is why the coupe/targa is so attractive, as it would have a much bigger trunk I'm sure. It would be a good car for just the two of us, affordable, fuel efficient, and track ready, but I still want that V8 so the Camaro is winning for now. Of course, they do have V8 conversions for the Solstice/Sky...

V8 conversion would be sweeeeet for the solstice/sky. At the Dallas auto show, people were asking left and right to pop the trunk on the Red Line. We couldn't pop it, but they were getting serious about buying it (or so it seemed) and really wanted to check it out.

The Sky is an immensely more attractive vehicle with it's sharp lines.

The Solstice with it's soft curves is much more sedate and 'feminine'.

I've sat in both. Quite tight. I'm 6' and the seat had to be most of the way back. I would have preferred ALL the way back, but in order to even see out the front windshield I had to bring it forward a little so I could recline the seat some (seat up and back my eyes were right in line with the windshield surround).

I think there is room for both. Pontiac needs both a small roadster plus a midsize RWD car, whether it be a coupe (therefore Firebird replacement) or sedan (therefore more along the lines of a GTO). That way they'll have compact, midsize, and fullsize covered.

I agree that the Sky is the far more attractive car, but for now it sounds like it will only be offered as a roadster and I don't want to have to put up with Saturn's crappy "You must pay MSRP" pricing policy. What rubbish.

In their defense, they are generally cheap as it is. And lots of people absolutely hate haggling, which is foolish. I just love it So Saturn offers an easy way to get in, pick a car, and get out. More like a car supermarket, than anything.

Actually Saturns tend to have higher MSRPs even before you haggle down the competitors. So even if you just bought a Solstice configured just like a Sky at MSRP, you'd still pay less. For example, the Sky Red Line and Solstice GXP are exactly the same except for styling and that the Sky includes AC as standard, where it is a couple hundred dollar option on the Solstice, yet the Sky Red Line starts $2,000 more than the GXP.
