2008 Pontiac G8 review in Car and Driver
I haven't been viewing the forum lately, but I saw the Car and Driver review for the 2008 Pontiac G8 and found things very interesting.
Will, of course, be built on the Zeta platform. In early 2008 will be built in Australia and China under the Pontiac, Buick and Chevy nameplates worldwide. Here's the good part- Production will begin in 2008 in Canada when the Camaro is scheduled to arrive. First year engine options 260Hp, 251 torque 3.6L V6 with a 5 speed auto 362Hp 391 torque L76 6.0L V8 with 6 speed auto 0-60 times with the V8 about 5 seconds. The 6 speed manual will come out (with the introduction of the new Camaro) in late 2008. V6 price about 26K V8 price about 32K The Camaro's prices may be a little lower for the G8 is a luxury vehicle that comes fully loaded. Hopefully all the first year bugs will have been hammered out by the time the Camaro comes out. And, too, there might be another V8 in the offing. I plan on checking out the G8 just to get an inkling of what is to come. I know the Camaro will be fairly different, but it would still be neat to dream a little If someone else has posted this already consider this a bump. |

Yea I thought about looking into those for something that'll hold me over until the top dog Camaro comes out.

Actually base price for the V8 is pennies south of $30,000 so even better! $32,000 is probably with a few options. I wouldn't call it a luxury car though. It is a Pontiac after all. The most luxurious feature is leather seating. You are correct though in saying the G8 will tell us a LOT about the Camaro, as it uses the same architecture. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the G8's current V8 as the base V8 in the Camaro as it has AFM, will still beat the expected power gains for the Mustang (I consider the Challenger irrelevant as massive power is needed just to creep that bloated land yacht along), and will leave comfortable room for an upper level engine for the top dog/special edition Camaros. Of course I wouldn't mind seeing something along the lines of the LS3 be the base V8 and having something north of 500hp for the better V8. It never hurts to completely blow the competition out of the water. Overall the G8 looks like a rather competent and compelling car and bodes very well for our Camaro.

Other reports said tht the steering in almost neutral. The writer made a comparison to the BMW 3 series, which is where the G8 has it's sights on. Since this platform is the basis for the Camaro, the handling and the IRS will make this MILES ahead of anything that the Mustang has. Shelby or otherwise. That's my opinion.

Damn, this is sounding better an better. I was planning on using the G8 for my fall back, but if we're reading between the lines right, then there should be no problem getting a fairly loaded v-8 Camaro for a more then decent price.

I'm guessing we'll get the GXP next year, early 2009, alongside the Camaro, perhaps offered with the same engine lineup? It would make sense to me. My question is when will the G8 be offered with the manual tranny they offered?

I don't see this as a BMW 3 series fighter, even if the comparison was made with the steering. It just isn't the same kind of car. The 3 series is a much smaller sedan and coupe. If anything it would go against the larger, more appropriately sized BMW 5 series.
To me this seems to be direct competition to cars like the Charger, 300C, and other larger sedans. A GXP version would be perfect competition for a SRT-8.

My thoughts exactly too. Level for level, the G8 is directly competitive with the 300C and Charger, and beats them, at least on paper. I'm sure we'll see some comparison tests after it is released.
