I'm not the one who started a thread congratulation myself for saving someone. See Matt 6:1 for my personal take on helping people. If you would get past my comments, which seem to have stung you a bit, maybe you'd see the deeper meaning here. It's all well and good to help someone, but to truly help someone requires time and money. These situations always amaze me. Someone does something superficial, congratulates himself, receives hearty approval from others, then walks away. What happens to the man after everyone is done patting themselves on the back for making a phone call? No one seems to consider that or even care. Instead of criticizing me for pointing that out, why don't you invest your time and money in someones life? And don't start an internet thread about it. |

2. The OP did something that i'm sure hundreds of people saw and just drove by not thinking twice. 3. Are you suggesting that for every person you try and help, you should spend the rest of your life, or theirs, watching over that person? 4. Compassion STARTED when the OP decided to stop with his daily life to help another human being. Something not a whole lot of people have for other people they don't know. 5. Just because the man might have been homeless, doesn't mean he doesn't live for something, or someone.

I see your point Berean, but I really think that one phone call is much more than the average person would have done. To be honest, if I saw an old guy fall down I probably would have just checked to see if he made it out of the street, then busted up laughing and kept driving. This thread gives me something to think about, thanks for sharring. |

That is truly a class act. Not everybody is aware of what happens around them, and that awareness and ability to step outside of your routine makes you a better person.

I have invested time and money into more than one person to help them get on their feet. I also work with many people on their spiritual fitness on a regular basis. Neither one of those gives me the ability nor the right to judge that others have not done enough themselves. The OP did just fine and I'm sure it made their day to do it and it made the homeless guys day that someone cared enough to help him. It may have done more for both of them than you choose to admit.

Now that I know helping someone requires me to be responsible for them forevermore I might think twice.
Nah, I'd still stop and do my part. Yes the 911 operator was being pretty nasty to my friend it sounded like. Someone always has to play the bad guy or we wouldn't know what nice really was, would we. Thanks for sticking up for me against our resident poopy-pants, everyone. |

Your 911, EMS system really sucks. I would say 50% of our EMS calls are bull, but we still go no matter what.

Although I'm sure that wasn't a sincere question, the answer is relative to the problem. Here's a challenge to all of you self indulgent people: If the OP will invest the time to find out who this man is, and what his condition is, and what he needs, I will pledge $500 to help him recover. The OP will need to designate a bona fide charity that the man is participating in, i.e. a homeless shelter or something similar, and/or determine what his medical bills are and maybe the money can go toward that. All the OP has to do is invest his time. The rest of us can invest money. Anyone else want to invest in someone with something other than congratulations or a phone call? |

I've been there as well. Unemployed for two years from my profession during the .com bust. I worked in a grocery store, as a security guard, cleaned swimming pools, anything I had to do to make ends meet. I finally got back into my profession and started over. Moved to a new state and I'm just now recovered financially to the point I was 10 years ago. Sometimes it's a hard road but we live in the greatest country on earth and there's always an opportunity for someone willing to work. You'll make it through. I'm sure of it. |
