V8's, in general
large displacement V8's, less general
old school big blocks, even less general
I can't get any less general than that

Number of cylinders makes no difference. It's the size of the cylinders. Ferrari 355 sounds like an F1 almost, and it's a V8. They also had F1 v10 that sounds nothing like the viper.

LOL, I can't decide haha.

This doesn't do it justice, but the small displacement Ferrari V12s with no muffler are incredible:

isn't quite stock but I couldn't find a good soundclip from a stock srt8. But it sounds like it's going to rip your face off- I love it.

I can't find a good clip of an S2000 really going for it, but at 8000 rpm they sound like an F1 car. They are just ok at idle.

I'm only looking at cars I've actually heard in real life, youtube sound is sort of mediocre. I think the old Ferrari is my pick, I've never heard an engine sound even close to like that since. It was so distinctive.

I love my American V8's. I've had all kinds from stop light thumpers to silent sleepers. Having said that, there is nothing sweeter than the sound of a finely tuned Ferrari - absolutely nothing! If you have a mechanical ear, you will think you died and went to heaven.

Viper is the only V10 I've heard. I don't know how he had it set up but at Spring Fling car show in Panama City last year I watched them DYNO a bunch and the Viper easily sounded the best I've ever heard.

Kind of a catch 22 question though.
