This is really nothing new for Ford, many of their current vehicles, including the 2011 Mustang GT, already have MyKey, which is the same basic thing as what they are talking about here with the Boss 302.

No, I don't think it's the same thing. This is a dual path powertrain control module, introduced on the Boss model. It sounds like it's much more comprehensive than MyKey.

From the press release:

"A joint project between Mustang engineers and Ford Racing, TracKey adds a second set of powertrain control module (PCM) software to a customer's Mustang Boss 302, activated by a specially programmed vehicle key. When invoked by TracKey, the new TracMode software alters more than 200 engine management parameters, increasing low-end torque and turning the potent but well-mannered stock Boss into a competition-ready track car. Remove TracKey and start Boss with the standard key, and all factory engine settings are restored for a comfortable drive home from the course."

But with a very different and much more advanced implementation including a high performance tune with the inclusion of launch control, etc.
The GT Mykey is a valet (detuned, low-rev limited)key. It takes away performance and detunes the baseline GT where as the Red key adds performance to the already stout Boss 302's 444 HP. I'd bet the pcm in the Boss is probably unique to its application.

I'll be curious to see what the HP differences on the dyno are between the black and red key. As well as lap times, 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Should be interesting.

I figured it is hard when Ford changes the damn car every month it seems while GM will stick to this Camaro for most likely a century. lol

Would definitely like to see the results on that!

There should be temptation. The main quest for the Boss is to be the best handling Mustang ever. And with these keys and HP bump it shouldn't be that far off a GT500 in straight line performance, at least not that far off. But if it is going to be the best handling Mustang when the GT500 is already a damn good handler itself that is something to be excited about. Especially considering the 2011 GT500 was a better handler than the GT500 KR from a couple of years ago which was also superb in the handling department.

I'm not impressed at all. on the fly map switching has been around for a long time with various aftermarket tuning solutions.

the boss 302 itself is pretty wicked, though.

I bet they are close to the GT500 with the regular key. It is significantly lighter than the GT500 in the first place with a nice HP bump over the Gt 5.0L which is far off the GT500's pace. With the red key it should be the same if not better than the GT500 considering it isn't street legal. What is scary is that it will outhandle the GT500 and supposedly can beat an M3 around Leguna Seca by a couple of seconds from what I have heard through the grapevine.

The 2012 GT500 and 2012 Z28 could both be in trouble on the road couse. It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Wait for the news report of someone getting their key impounded when stopped by police for having an illegal tune on the street. Just like those towns that will jack you up for a non factory stock exhaust, clear lenses or a NOS tank.

Why, one look and one can see your using an illegal tune on the street, not so on a Camaro. And cops don't carry scan equipment for cars. But can and will look for the black keys onces it becomes popular and wide spread knowledge.

Its gonna fail n back fire hard.

Up here in BC we're more concerned with getting our cars towed/impounded and a license suspension for going 25 mph over the posted speed limit. But it seems as if Govt bureaucracy is getting out of hand elsewhere to. We need some car guys to run for office. lol

Still, it's just managing certain things via the PCM. It's not like the Boss 302 is going to have two different PCM's, it's the same PCM with two different strategies available.

The MyKey of today is more than just a fancy valet switch. With MyKey, you can control not only the revs, but also set a top speed limit, limit the audio volume, etc. It's all done by creating a specific program in the PCM that automatically activates when a particular key is used in the ignition.

In any case, it's a cool idea that allows Ford to provide the Boss 302 with an "off-road" performance strategy without having to take the car somewhere to get a "tune" and not have to worry about any warranty issues.

Most like it, but some will just hate it for no other reason than it's offered by Ford.

When you guys talk about the "button" like tune it reminds me of the BMW ///M cars.. in my BMW M5 there was a button on the steering wheel that actually allowed the car to move from 400HP start up mode , to a much more aggressive 507HP Sport Tune. You could seriously tell the difference ... like night and day.

Its a Cool feature kind of sounds like the second key for the Bugatti Veyron .... still doesnt influence me to buy a mustang any time soon ....
