and about the homeowner saying they will pay anything right then and there...well if the fire department accepted that and tried to put out the fire, then everyone else that did/does pay may stop, and just pay IF their house catches on fire on the spot.

Those that think - no lives were lost or in danger - have you read about the pets that burned up while the firemen watched. Have you read about the horses that burned alive in a barn at another fire... because the firemen were told "that address is not on the list" - let it burn.

So these firemen, chief, and mayor stood their ground and said - no pay, let it burn. Well good for them. Hope they sleep well at night for standing their ground.

Some day if they need help from their fellow man in an emergency, let's all check the list first and see if they are worthy of our assistance.

Yes, the home owner was in the wrong for not paying. But, should emergency assistance be refused based on a missed payment? Let's think that one over while we imagine how the animals felt being burned alive.

Your there, you have a fire truck, turn the fcking hose on. Just my opinion.

Quote from another news source:

"Unfortunately, this home owner had forgotten to pay the annual fee, which he had always done before. When the fireman arrived, they told him that the 911 operator had just called on the radio and told them that his house was "not on the approved list", so they couldnīt put the fire out. The home owner and his family then had to stand by and watch everything burn to the ground. They also lost their two dogs and three cats in the fire. It is now known that the individual that usually waives the unpaid fee payment until after a fire, this time he decided to stick with the rules. While playing golf and on a cell phone, this fire chief instructed the firemen to not put water on the house fire due to the ownerīs non-payment status.

It now turns out that this was the third house in this county to burn like this over the past few years, and in one case, a barn burned to the ground killing all the horses inside. At that fire, the firemen were apparently told before they left the station that the home owner hadnīt paid the $75.00 fee, so the fire truck never even left the station.."
I'm not buying the pet story as is. Different news reports say different things on the pets. Some say none, and some have the numbers wrong. Seriously...... you started your house on fire by burning stuff in barrels be the window....... I'm thinking if you gave a damn about your pets, you had a MUCH better chance of getting them out WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY before the help arrived.

The rest....... So be it......... I couldn't make the decision, but I respect the person who can.........

We may get a piece of news about this that explains things better. And may even change my mind. But face value so far. I side with the city. Reluctantly.

I repsect your opinion and you bring up valid points.

Knowing the risks involved, I would be damn certain my $75 made it to the city for fire protection. heck, I would even drive it there and not trust it to the mail.

Secondly, i would move to an area that has fire protectio and not ttrust it to some nearby city that isn't even in the same county. Once again, He CHOSE to live there, there are CONSEQUENCES to HIS CHOICE.

Yup, and next time they need an equipment update or training check, they can pray for a fire to start.

I damn sure made sure I covered my bases when I bought our house.

We really liked this other house, Bonnie LOVED the huge ass kitchen, but it was farther out in the county and though it had a volunteer fire dept., we opted for our current house. We have a fire hydrant at the end of our driveway.

I filled my pool with it last time.

LMAO.

And a 3 inch lead from that hydrant makes watering the lawn a tad bit easier too.

Still going....

Funny that this subject bring to light very similar sound that our Department has been battling for year now ( do More with Less). As I read through this, It almost brings me back to the same, damned if you do damned if you don't.. In one hand do nothing he didn't pay.. in the other save the house and pets (big unknown I was not on scene) and try to collect.. Both has their negative impacts one the FD did nothing and look like chumps in the media. the other set the precedence if you don't pay your house will still be saved and the FD has 0 funding in the end.. And if they try to collect by force the the look bad by being the Gov agency that is taking my house and the media rolls w/ it. In the end get educated get involved and go to your local FD and get informed. Scrappy said it best stop blaming other for you piss poor choices and own up to your F ing mistakes.. Lawyers are not the answer to your stupidity.

I know one thing that could have solved everything, but probably wasn't thought about at the time...tell the homeowner to pay the full amount from the time he moved in, until that point. I guess the fire department needs to start carrying a credit card machine. lol

I could tell some Vikings jokes to lighten the mood.

Q. What do you call a Viking with a Super Bowl ring?
A. A thief

In all fairness, I'm a Lions fan...so...yeah.

Looks pretty straight forward to me. The guy took a risk, and lost. Happens everyday. Next time he will pay the 75 bucks.

On one hand I understand why they didn't but on the other this is america. If you were having a heart attack and hadn't paid your last bill for a flu shot yet should I let you die? No. It's F'd up. Not only that but I'm sure they are screwed with insurance due to not paying the fire charge. It could have just been an oversight and not an outright refusal. I was raised to protect those in need regardless of weather or not they deserve it. It's just wrong. Everyone is quick to point fingers till they are in that situation.
