No it is not true.
Detroit (AP) -- Turns out you can take your "Chevy to the levee" or any other darn place you please. General Motors Co. on Thursday backed off a "poorly worded" internal memo that asked employees to refer to the brand only as "Chevrolet" in an effort to create consistency. GM says in a statement that it "in no way" is discouraging anybody from using the name Chevy. The internal memo was part of an effort to develop a consistent brand name as it tries to broaden its global presence. There have been many pop culture references to Chevys. Perhaps the best known is in Don McLean's "American Pie." Its signature sing-along chorus begins, "Bye bye, Miss American pie, drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry." |

Seriously folks. You're making a big deal out of nothing. Spending bailout money? This won't cost GM anything. Again, you're just going to hear "Chevrolet" a lot more. It makes no difference unless hearing the full brand name is insulting to you or something.

Good thing Don was going to the levee. The song would have been a little different if he was going to the fjord. |

Like you said, both the news reports I saw today didn't reference the fact that it was an internal memo at all. This whole thing is getting blown out of proportion.

This kind of thing is what I am/was afraid of happening. The worry is that the 'new' management team might only think about money and their own image/legacy (that the turn around was their idea)and not that of the brand/company loyalties. I say, based on the current and immediate future GM vehicles, that the 'old' GM manangement had/has ushered in and planned for the GM turn around. I am just hoping and praying that the new mgt team doesn't screw it up. I really do wish them well! PS: Just got to say that during their own negotiations our other competitive brethren car companies DID piggyback/use/leverage the plans and contracts dictated to GM. All without getting 'pie on their face' and with all the advantages (other than their huge debt). LOVE MY CHEVY CAMARO AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHEVY VOLT AND THE CHEVY CAMARO Z28. |

This just goes to show the power of what a leaked comment to an already biased media can do. Guys, unfortunately, we have a lot of work to do. Try leaking to the media that the Chevrolet/Chevy Camaro has outsold its counterparts 11 of past 12 months and see what story results. Obviously, they aren't gonna comment on that one. Even if they did, I can use my imagination to figure out what it would sound like. The media still loves those ad dollars coming in tho, so that they can keep their cush opinionated jobs. |

. Really its the main reason why I try not to base information off of the media.. And hey..it may not have done much, but at least you got your word in on the matter and it let off some steam. As far as I see it..Me= 1 Media's effect=0...

I can't believe the guy who sent out this memo.
This is just pathetic. I mean, give me a BREAK! I've owned 9 CHEVY'S and guess what? Knowing that they are called Chevrolets and not Chevy's had NO influence in my purchasing decision. I LOVE CHEVY. I LOVE CHEVROLET. It does not F'ing MATTER. GIVE ME A BREAK. There are MORE important things in the whole advertisement arena than the use of Chevy vs Chevrolet. Psh... |
