I realized a long time ago why the Camaro is heavier than the Mustang.

It's BIGGER. It's not rocket science, and I know there are other variables- but holy crap people are looking for voodoo here and there just isn't any. Think about it.

You have Smallest sized=Mustang=Lightest
You have Medium sized=Camaro=Medium weight
You have Biggest sized=Challenger=Heaviest

I bet if you went and did a water displacement test it would correlate pretty closely with their weight difference. There's not a lot of exotic structures or materials in any of these cars so the construction techniques are going to be ballpark similar. I think they all have the same transmission now, but you'll have a little weight difference for the engine and a little for the IRS. But I'd put money on the weight difference being 75% or higher simply because it's bigger.

I'm wondering when someone else is going to duplicate Motor Trends "miracle" quarter mile time for they're Mustang GT. Right now,.....SS leads.

It's CRAZY... I'm lost as to how close these cars are. It's almost as if Ford went out and benchmarked the Camaro SS or something..

Look at how the Camaro simply starts pulling away as the MPHs get higher

That is not why the Camaro is heavier, that is not even really why the Challenger is heavier. The Camaro is heavier because it shares a platform with a full size RWD sedan, which is more rigid (heavy) than it has to be for a 2 door car. The IRS is a bit heavier than a solid axle, but probably not that much. The challenger is the same story but Chrysler does not have an aluminum V8 to save weight with, the Hemi engines are cast iron. The V6 Challenger weighs almost the same as the V6 Camaro, despite being quite a bit larger.

The Mustang has an advantage that the Camaro lost when it went out of production, a dedicated chassis to build it on with as few compromises as possible.

Exactly. I think on the high-end the SS is going to really show where its power lies and will pull away from the stang. The stang can contend, but the longer the race the wider the gap between the two. Not to mention the stang is limited at 146mph and the SS 157mph.

The hood being already aluminum...I don't think you'd save but 15lbs going Carbon fiber with that thing...I could be wrong, though.

Gotcha... So where could weight be shaved from the Camaro??? Seems that it's mass really comes from the fact that it is larger.. and is based on a larger Platform.

Truth be told.. bot it.. and the G8 are still unbelievable performers.. and this test only proves that it the Camaro was as small as the Mustang.. and weighed the same.. It would DESTROY the Ford.

My thought would be that unless the extra 10 HP really helped the GT500... Ford will have hurt themselves by matching the GT to the SS's specs... as the SS already runs damn close to the current GT500's specs.

The '11 GT500 should be much quicker than pre-'10 and considerably quicker than '10. It's lighter, has better weight distribution (more rearward) and makes more power. The problem with the GT500, and it seems the same problem with the mustang gt now, is the car is under-rubbered. The '10 gt500 is easily capable of low 12's if you launch it properly. People have even gone 11's. The issues is, a lot of people are running 2.2-2.3 60's in a 540hp rwd car. The redesigned suspension and weight distribution should help. If I were trying to lighten the camaro, I would look into going with lighter wheels, as the stock ones are quite large and heavy. I would also look into going with as lightweight of mods as possible as I modify. Unfortunately, dropping weight is never really cost-effective. It's almost always cheaper to add more power.
