They'll lose a whole lot more than that in settlements and lawsuits now that the federal government has passed bureaucratic judgement.

Fines and lawsuits aside, Toyota is gonna lose the MOST in loss of reputation and consumer trust. That alone could be enough to keep Toyota from ever seeing the top again.

They should take away all the tax exemptions we gave them to build factories here. I think that would be fair.

So far Toyota hasn't been affected by the congress investigations, at least in America's perception. They were only a couple thousand units behind from outselling GM last month.

The real fine will come from the marketplace. The government fine is just symbolic.

No, the average idiot American will still blindly buy Toyota.

Eh...
The lemmings didn't stay away for too long. All it took was some deep price cuts. I guess the life of your family is worth 0% financing these days.

I like how you think, sir.

Well, people are still buying them. Alot of them in fact. What might end up hurting them in the long run though, is they are adopting the philosphy that I feel hurt the big 3 for so long. Which is cut the price of their cars enough because its better to take a loss and have people drive one of their cars instead a competitor's. That line of thinking is a very slippery slope.

The fine is small, yeah, but this is a good thing. This opens up Toyota to a lot of reaming in private civil trials.

The fine is nothing compared to what they are going to loose in courts to the individuals suing them.

If they pay the fine, they basically admit they ****ed up, and thus set a precedent for those individuals to use against Toyota in court.

I think Toyota has spend more on incentives for March than this fine

I hope they get sued beyond belief, as they should. However, it seems America doesn't care about these potentially deadly mistakes.

Their incentive campaign is probably less than 1% of their total revenue. The only thing this does, in regards to punishing Toyota, is what Zeus says; it opens up the floodgates of private lawsuits, considering this essentially means Toyota agrees they made a mistake.
