Why is there no midsize diesel truck?

Plus those numbers appear to be grossly under rated. It says the towing capacity is 3500lbs, but in this review they drove one through the desert towing a 5000lb trailer and they said it did great.

I think your out numbered on this one Zeus. Keep in mind if they would build a midsized truck to do the job of a full size truck their're would be no difference.
Because, the everything else on the truck would have to be heavier duty to support the new diesel. Plus we're americans, we go big or go home.(figured I would throw that in before someone else does. Not Really my point of view)

A stronger engine will help with towing, but not vehicle capacity. Towing capacity varies greatly with drive train selection, but the non-towing capacity stays fairly constant and actually decreases with anything that adds weight to the truck, like larger engines or 4 wheel drive. If you add 200 lbs of engine, you need to remove 200 lbs of payload capacity. You might gain 500 lbs towing but you can't put as much stuff in the truck itself.

I think where ya'll are separated is some of you are working a truck and ohters are playing a truck hard.

I work my truck. It is usually hooked to a trailer that is at least a 5000# trailer. My 24ft enclosed unloaded weighs in at 3500# unloaded and my travel trailer is 12,000#. I used to have a 2500HD but pulling too many large trailers tend to have a "wag the dog" effect, so I bought a dually.

If all you are going to pull is a bumper pull trailer then a Tacoma or variant is fine. If you are going to use a truck for what they are made for then going domestic full size is the only way to go. I am hearing good things about the full size Nissans though. The gas mileage on the V8's on those are not as good as the domestics.

What I'm waiting on is a GM diesel SUV. The Yukon we have gets terrible mileage at 14-16mpg and it's underpowered even with the 6.0L.

Anyways upon googling 'mid sized diesel truck' I found a bunch of people talking about how GM and Ford were making Diesel V6's.... got excited... then saw the thread was from 2005.

The diesel engine with all its torque would be a BIG plus on power and capability... The suspension is the strong point of the Tacoma right now, so it wouldn't need a ton of beefing.

you might/could pull more, but that doesnt mean you can carrymore. also keep in mind the weight of a diesel (depending on how much power you are wanting). you could put a smaller diesel in the truck to keep weight down, but then you are reducing the power output as well.

its more than just the suspension that is involved with payload and towing capability, the whole structure of the truck would need upgrading in order to haul more.

urea injection is a PITA, the new cummins 6.7L motors have been designed to meet the new emissions requirements without the use of urea

and their future counterparts are being designed to continue on past the 2015 emissions req without urea and a whole slew of new tech.
