Slightly off topic, but does any one else think that NASCAR should be the way they were in the 60's? I mean a bunch of DIFFERENT cars driving in circles would be way more interesting.
bunch of different cars and very little rules on performance modifications. maybe restrict engine size but very little else. lol. that would cause more technology would probably trickle down to us and we'd get faster more efficient cars.

but another reason I didn't want toyota to join nascar. now tell my gf. . .watch the stuff start flying on how I'm biased and never give them a chance.

I can't wait to tell my cousin! He's a service tech for Toyota and is constantly going on and on about how superior they are. Now I get yet another chance to knock him down a peg.

What most Toyota fans don't know is the engine they use in Nascar has no production based design at all.. Toyota NEVER built a pushrod V8 with a carb. It was designed and built for one specific job.. winning at nascar. to do that they took all three manufactures engines and reverse engineered them, took the best from each design and then improved upon it.. NASCAR let Toyota have anything they wanted just to get them in the game....

Which violates one of the most core rules of nascar, if I'm not mistaken.

right now none of the engines used are production based....BUT at one time the Chevy and Ford engines were... I think Dodge had to develop a new engine when they got back into racing...

"When NASCAR was first formed by Bill France, Sr. in 1948 to regulate stock car racing in the U.S., there was a requirement that any car entered be made entirely of parts available to the general public through automobile dealers. Additionally, the cars had to be a models that had sold more than 500 units to the public. "

"The 1973 oil crisis meant that large displacement special edition homologation cars of all makes were suddenly sitting unsold. From this point forward, stock cars were quickly allowed to differ greatly from anything available to the public. Modern racing "stock" cars are stock in name only, using a body template that is vaguely modeled after currently-available automobiles. The chassis, running gear, and other equipment have almost nothing to do with anything in ordinary automobiles."

I say go back to the original rules and see if TOY-ota can handle it.

NASCAR is a joke period. I can't believe people want to watch family sedans drive around in a circle for 5 hours. BORING.

Now some of you NASCAR guys go watch a MOTOGP race. That's racing. Tons of changing positions and dicing for the lead. Some races the leader changes 4-5 times in a single lap. The motorcycles are completely prototype. Built the best bike you can and race it. The only "real" rules are it has to way at least 325lbs and be an 800cc engine running on race fuel. Not a single part on these bikes is allowed to be offered to the public for sale. However this leads to some awesome trickle down technology for the street going sport bikes.

If NASCAR was setup like that we'd all win.

While I'd argue that MOTOGP is more exciting, I think that NASCAR is interesting only because the idea that anyone can have these cars opens up the imagination to the idea that anyone can race like that with the right talent for driving.

On a side note, your avatar is downright awesome.

The only thing I can add is: the LS series of V8's would DOMINATE!!!

With the power AND economy they produce, not one manufacturer could keep up!!!!!!

I'd like to see more Rally and ALMS racing. I'd also like to see a super sedan racing series (like what they have in Australia. Youtube it. The crashes are heroic.) pitting the G8 against the Charger against...whatever Ford comes up with for a large RWD sedan. That would go back to NASCAR's roots well. If Toyota really wanted to play I guess they could bring their Avalon. Or there could be a super coupe series with the Camaro vs Mustang vs Challenger, and if Toyota wanted in well, they have the tC.
