Of course Toyota cheated. They have to if they want to stand a chance against American cars.

Moreover, by doing this, they make it harder for other makes to get into NASCAR because they damage the reputation of Japanese brands. A decent company could be competing in NASCAR instead of a child-labor using, performance-cheating mistake like Toyota.

I can respect Honda (love the Fit). Mazda "gets" us car guys, and Nissan makes more than a couple cars that strike my fancy. Toyota? Scum. Crappy quality, boring cars, and yet everyone seems to love them.

They finally accomplished what Honda did in the 90s. They are the norm. As a result, everyone has one, and nothing is special about them. Moreover, Toyotas by being so average, have developed a good name in the area of economy cars. GM needs to earn that back while maintaining the recent muscle edge that has been developing around the ZR1 and upcoming Camaro.

Crapyota's already on its way out. This is something I've known forever. The auto industry is a vicious cycle, once you screw up too many times, you're in big trouble. Take Ford back in the early days of automotive manufacturing. Undoubtedly the largest automaker in the world. They got arrogant, only producing cars in black. GM offered a wide range of colors, and just that little thing boosted GM to world's largest automaker for 77 years straight. In the 80s and 90s, GM got cocky and arrogant, thought that they could throw crap on dealer lots and people would still buy them. I know this might sound bad, especially for you guys that own 3rd gen. Camaros out of Norwood, but if a part didn't fit right, my dad said that they fetched a hammer and made it fit. People got fed up, especially during the rebadging era, where practically every GM vehicle had a twin in another division. Toyota had built up a reputation for quality, and people turned to them for cars. Now toyota's passed GM in global sales, but they're already on the way down. The tundra is a complete joke, "an embarassment" to the company as stated by a toyota exec. With cracking tailgates, rust problems, frames cracking clean through the middle, fuel lines cracking, engine sludge problems, toyota's reputation for quality is quickly going down the drain. It won't be long before toyota owners are fed up with all the problems and start looking for different cars.

In fact, it's already happened to a lot of people. I know of one woman who owned imports almost all her life. When her highlander's engine literally had to be rebuilt because of sludge problems, she finally called it quits and bought a 2008 Malibu, and she says it's the best car she's ever owned.

Okay, now correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've read Toyota poured a bunch of money into engine development and ended up with a motor that had more power than everyone else. The other teams whined and NASCAR made Toyota scale back the power a bit. But JGR wanted to make sure their HP numbers were more in line with everyone elses so they made sure the throttle wouldnt open 100%. lol Good stuff. Seems like the other teams are just upset they couldnt get the same power numbers as Toyota.

That's not it at all. The point is that the numbers are supposed to match. NASCAR is supposed to be an even playing field, and Toyota's lead is a violation of NASCAR policy.

All of these companies have developed cars significantly more powerful than NASCAR cars. Toyota didn't outdo them. Toyota cheated.

Very true my friend. It is a vicious cycle, and the top company does get comfortable and arrogant time after time, just as you said. I definitely see Toyota's downfall and GM's recover, but it will take a lot of time. Look at how long it's taken GM to really fall from the top spot since the start of the bad days. It will also take a long time to recover. The only scary thing is it will be a really tight race to regain customer trust and respect against a dwindling cash supply. When (/if ) GM recovers, I actually hope they don't regain the top spot and then expose themselves to complacency again. A smaller, leaner, meaner GM sounds better to me.

It's also a matter of branding. GM needs to maintain a top brand. Ferrari's reputation is immaculate because it is a brand based upon being one of the most stylish, race-inspired cars. GM needs to keep Caddy in top shape and continue to pit Pontiac against BMW to show that GM is bringing the best competition the industry can offer. If GM can continue to use other brands' reputations to bring up its own brands, GM will get its spot back and stay for a long time.

ooooooooo I can't wait for the day TOYota goes bankrupt!!!!
Slightly off topic, but does any one else think that NASCAR should be the way they were in the 60's? I mean a bunch of DIFFERENT cars driving in circles would be way more interesting.
