GM gave us a fleet of 04's and I really didn't like them. It is real tight in the front seat and claustrophobic as hell. Nice in winter though. They are better suited for the smaller officers.

I would rather pay for the extra gas than have a car not start when I call for help.

Ok...18 layers of Kevlar and the inner and outter shell makes 20. Your wearing a t-shirt under it and your Polly-ester non breathable shirt over that.

You go sit in a car with 22 shirts on and lets see how long you last.

That is their office. Most offices are air conditioned. Yes there is a cost associated with that but if you want someone who is alive to answer your call for distress dont
have a cow about a car at idle. Maybe you should turn your car off at all red lights.

Sorry....I just think some people dont think things through.

What? '04 Impalas?

That's not an Impala. It's a Caprice. Brought over from Holden. RWD, 355 HP, a whole laundry list of features.

Yes, I've seen them. The car above isn't an Impala. It's a Caprice.

Was referring to the last GM product I had the displeasure to drive (save winter and snow) Of course, indirectly, the Caprice has been out of service for what 13-14 years. I surmise I should have said fleet of 04 Impalas...as I assumed everyone knew the Caprice hasn't been around in a decade.

Mike Judge sent me a link about the new Caprice and spoke a little about them in Oshawa. Although nice, Ford will be continuing production of the Crown Vic Interceptor package until 11 and I anticipate most departments will stick with them. Ford may rethink ceasing production. Most departments will not go to a 355 HP platform as there is no reason to. We shall see what major departments decide in the next 5 years, but don't expect PI to dissappear anytime soon. Ford has at least 65% of the market there.

AGREED!!!...

I have friends that are cops, and they have to be ready to go in a second, and they have computers in their cars that have to always be on, because they get info off them too...

They are not doing it just to waste money...there is a purpose to it...

the main reason we do it is for quicker response. For some reason, probably from all the electronics and having extra moisture trapped in from the bullet-proof vest the cars fog up on the inside much more easily than regular cars. I prefer not to hang my head out the window to see when I am going 80 mph to keep your daughter from getting beat up by her boyfriend. Its very aggravating when there is a hot call and you have to sit and wait for 2 minutes until the windows defrost. I only keep my sqaud running on nights/days when this happens.

Some of my subordinates seem to think they can always let them run, which is usually followed by an ass chewing from me.

The guys in the summer that work during the days probably keep the A/C going because of the electronics and the aforementioned hot, sweaty vest.

And, usually the department is too cheap to buy a nice battery, which results in the battery going dead in less than a day.
Well said! When I worked in K9, the car was never off. It's mostly a judgement call depending on many factors like you said!
Thanks

Why do we sit in a car with our car idling? Because 1. We put up with so much sh%t from "you people" 2. We get accused of "donut diving" although I have never had a donut in 21 years "while working". 3. because we are lazy, 4. because it isn't our gas, it's the taxpayers 5. All of us don't give a damn about global warming because we are too pissed off at other things.

The truth is...The police car is "our office". Do you have AC on at work? Heat? radio? We do most of our work in the car. Have any of you ever played sports for years and been injured? I have broken 14 bones on the job, broke ankle, leg, both radius (arm) pinky ring and middle finger, metatarsus, collar bone...all on the job in Detroit. It is somewhat comfortable after 21 years to just chill.

You have us sitting in our office (cruiser) and you think we are lazy...Well, go sit in your office and enjoy yourself and your cold a/c, microwave, saftey of your four walls, because my office has a bullseye on it and no matter what, I feel safe there. Just becuase mine has wheels, you don't like it?

They be hatin' when they see me rollin'
Amen Brotha, all though due to recent gas prices our department has gone to a "no idle" policy when out of the vehicle for extended periods of time such as at the station or lengthy investigations. But I agree, that is our office that we spend a majority of time in, we should be allowed to be safe and comfortable without having to defend why we have nice cars or why the car is running with the AC on.
