Think they do it just to get people to ask questions in the Car Forums

I can think of far worse things for our tax dollars to be wasted on than helping the PD do their job.

When I used to drive a truck OTR, I'd start out on Sunday night and my truck would never be shut off till the next Sat. morning. Not even when I was fueling.

Cops,

Why do you leave your furnace on in the winter and the A/C on in the summer?

the main reason we do it is for quicker response. For some reason, probably from all the electronics and having extra moisture trapped in from the bullet-proof vest the cars fog up on the inside much more easily than regular cars. I prefer not to hang my head out the window to see when I am going 80 mph to keep your daughter from getting beat up by her boyfriend. Its very aggravating when there is a hot call and you have to sit and wait for 2 minutes until the windows defrost. I only keep my sqaud running on nights/days when this happens.

Some of my subordinates seem to think they can always let them run, which is usually followed by an ass chewing from me.

The guys in the summer that work during the days probably keep the A/C going because of the electronics and the aforementioned hot, sweaty vest.

And, usually the department is too cheap to buy a nice battery, which results in the battery going dead in less than a day.

They are always running because its an enforced rule for readiment. If anything is to happen they have to be able to move out one a seconds notice. The electorincs are not really an issue, the alt and regulator can handle it just fine and will not kill battery from a QT stop.

and also the fact it take 5-10 minutes for the laptops they rely on to boot up, so they need to keep the juice flowing.

Now if they had IMPALA'S, they'd see a fuel savings over those thirsty Crown Vics.

DING FOR THE WINNER!

An officer has to be able to get in their car and HAUL ASS in a split second with all their equipment operating and at their disposal. Many officers carry 2 keys and one never leaves the ignition during their shift.

Stopping and starting the car sounds minor but I challenge anyone to get some of the worst news you have ever had like your friend (CLOSE FRIEND, like a brother of another mother) has been been shot and his dying words are being broadcast over the radio you are holding in your hand. You have to stop what you're doing, get to your car, get to the location SAFELY, try to make sense of what happened QUICKLY and arrest the shit head responsible.

This may sound extreme but I LIVED IT and the only good news is my homie texts me nearly daily to tell me he loves his little brother, ****ING PRICELESS!

To post the tax dollar stuff is just moronic.

Did any one notice the Impalas lined up next to the fence in the pictures from Oshawa??? Those were all police vehicles with the pre wiring for the lights coming out of the roof. That's what we drive. Plus the shotgun mounts in the front won't open without the vehicle running. The light bars won't work, the radio, video, puter, nothing. The computer has a battery backup for when the vehicle is off, i.e. station, eating, etc. The amps that flow through those cars are amazing. Almost like the guy with the stereo system that you could use at a concert. All those devices turned on and vehicle not running = dead battery pretty quick. Sorry about your tax dollars running through my engine, but I think you'd be more upset if I couldn't get there because I couldn't manage my equipment. Nothing personal, just an opinion.

There is a 300 amp alternator running in my car right now..usually a 120 amp draw for running our digital camera systems, digital radio, satellite uplink, laptops and Lojack. Then add a lightbar and siren..Battery space limited to 900 CCA battery.

Why do we sit in a car with our car idling? Because 1. We put up with so much sh%t from "you people" 2. We get accused of "donut diving" although I have never had a donut in 21 years "while working". 3. because we are lazy, 4. because it isn't our gas, it's the taxpayers 5. All of us don't give a damn about global warming because we are too pissed off at other things.

The truth is...The police car is "our office". Do you have AC on at work? Heat? radio? We do most of our work in the car. Have any of you ever played sports for years and been injured? I have broken 14 bones on the job, broke ankle, leg, both radius (arm) pinky ring and middle finger, metatarsus, collar bone...all on the job in Detroit. It is somewhat comfortable after 21 years to just chill.

You have us sitting in our office (cruiser) and you think we are lazy...Well, go sit in your office and enjoy yourself and your cold a/c, microwave, saftey of your four walls, because my office has a bullseye on it and no matter what, I feel safe there. Just becuase mine has wheels, you don't like it?

They be hatin' when they see me rollin'

Ditto with Banshee. My department pays us car allowance so essentially we pay for our own gas with our salary. The car runs the whole shift even tho we could save money by turning it off. That is just not possible with all of the equipment much less the fact that with the vests we wear and all the equipment on our belts we are about a bazillion degrees hotter in the sun then when in regular clothes so it is nice, when I finish directing traffic around an accident so ya'll can get home on time, to get back into a nice chilly vehicle!!!!

kinda sort the same with our Humvees and 7 tons. During field operations in non black out condition they have to be running for operational uses in a combat enviroment.
