When my dad ran in the 70s against Corvettes with his Chevelle in NHRA Super stock they had to run the stock IRS. NHRA let them convert to a solid rear axle for safety reasons they all picked up a 1-2 tenths over him. Wonder what it would be worth on a stock car???

I personally prefer the SRA over the IRS. But I prefer drag racing, and am willing to sacrifice a little ride comfort for performance at the strip.

IMO that is why the Mustang eeked out the Camaro in sales this month. 30K is a big obstacle for buyers.

This thread, even though it has almost taken a couple of bad turns, is really cool. These are conversations that haven't happened since before we even had the internet. I think of the years that the Camaro wasn't in production as kind of "the dead/lame era". I got my license in 89 and the things discussed on this and other threads are what made Saturday night car meets so much damn fun. It's really awesome to see these two cars duke it out again. Hell Dodge even decided to throw something substantially better into the arena, not a LeBaron or 3000GT clone (see Dodge Stealth).....

Perfomance nod goes to the 5.0 but ride quality is sacrificed. But I agree, for most of us that is not a real big deal. we knowingly choose performance over comfort. Chevy seems to be trying to bring in a bigger market by going with a little more comfortable car.... We'll see if it works or not, now that the two cars are so close in performance.

Overall, this thread is surprisingly respectful from both sides despite strong opinions being expressed. Good job guys.

I'm an old drag racer ,and the solid axles are no doubt better for that. But really, that's where it ends. I would much rather have the independent for on the street. How many people buy camaros live at the drags? A lot less than use them on the highway and want all the modern comforts. GM did the right thing here.
