Your logic will fall on many deaf ears, and that is going to be a weakness of the Volt. To so much of the population, appearance is the most important quality of a car and to look similar to another model makes it worthless to those people. If people think the Volt looks like the Prius, it will compete for Prius's portion of those type of customers, and will lose out on the portion of those customers who don't want the Prius.
You can dress up a turd and sell it to half of the population while they ignore the steak platter. People buy cars that they've never sat in because of how they look, without even knowing if they'll be comfortable in said car, let alone how it drives.
That's okay for those people, even if I think it's crazy. It serves their needs; they need a car that projects whatever image they want to be seen as. It's something that must be an important part of design and marketing.
