Halloween 2008

There doesn't seem to be one definitive thread, so I thought I'd get one started, mainly for those who want to post anecdotes or pictures. To get the ball rolling, here are some shots of the crown jewel of my costume. The blue is darker than it looks in the photos, but the flash really shows off the metallic paint.

Nice job. I'm going as Three Hole Punch Jim this year. Bonus points if you know the reference.

Actually, none of those. I've been slowly collecting gear for the last three years, 'cause Top Gun is my favorite movie, and I finally got the helmet yesterday to complete the costume this year. Anytime I see other people go as Maverick, they only ever have the flight suit, and maybe some generic patches, but never the same patches he had in the movie or any of the other gear. I've got every last bit of gear and equipment, and my patches and helmet are all 100% screen accurate.

But that's always the best compliment, when someone asks if I'm a pilot, or they just assume I am. Last year, I ran into another guy wearing a flight suit, but I could tell there was something different about this guy, because he had a pretty impressive assortment of patches, and not just ones that all said "Navy" or "Top Gun." Turns out he was a real pilot back in the '80's, and he was totally blown away by the fact that I had taken the time to research the equipment (much of which is no longer in use) and track it all down. I could really tell it brought back a lot of memories for him, seeing all that stuff, and that meant more to me than anything else.

Well done!

That's quite a task. For those that know how a flight suit is supposed to be worn it's easy to spot those that dont.

Kudos to you.

have you been able to get a survival vest?

Thanks. I got the vest with all the equipment in it - dye marker, distilled water, fishing net, shark repellent, first aid kit, etc. You name it, I've got it. When I got it on eBay, the guy shipped it with the life preserver attached. It was really a great find.

Here's a complete list of what I've got:

CWU-27/P Flight suit w/ screen accurate patches
CSU-13 B/P Anti-g pants
MA-2 Torso Harness
SV-2B Survival Vest (full of equipment)
LPU-23 B/P Life preserver
HGU-33/P Flight Helmet
MBU-12/P Oxygen mask (green)
Dog Tags
Ray Ban Aviators

This is from last year before I got the helmet, oxygen mask, and torso harness:

I look good in 3,000 posts, though!

Actually, I've never tried tights. I'm not graceful enough to be a dancer.

My wife and I were "Supersonic Electronic" last weekend. I made our costumes. We won the costume contest for the 3rd year.
