NHTSA Would Have Fined Toyota More If Allowed

Some have said that $16 million was enough for what Toyota has done, but the agency responsible for safety has decided otherwise, announcing that the tally would have been $13.8 billion had the law not limited them to a fine of $16 million. It is still possible for more fines to be issued if the NHTSA can determine that there have been multiple sources of Toyota's woes.

Wow! That would have been a heck of a fine.

It certainly seems more appropriate for the amount of damage they've done in the process of covering up their failures, developing dangerous products, misleading the public, causing families to lose their loved ones, and avoiding expensive recalls for half-measures that did nothing to solve problems.

Hmm, I wonder ... could they issue a series of individual fines? One for each model, for each unintended acceleration related recall?

I can't imagine how they got that number. Why stop at $13.8 billion. Why not 800 billion, kagillion, thousand, madeup figure, and two cents? One arbitrary figure makes as much sense as any other (even if it isn't real). I really can't get beyond the irony of who is levying the fine for misleading the public.

Seriously though, I've never been a fan of Toyota and always knew that their undeserved reputation of superiority would crash eventually. I just didn't think it would be this spectacular. As always, the real fine will eventually be paid in the marketplace (and in Toyota's case in court too).

I'm sure they have reasoning for 13.8 billion. Just because it isn't explained fully in a 500 page document released to the public doesn't mean its arbitrary.

that was an arbitrary number that I felt appropriate for a big government report.

yes yes, I see the irony in using an arbitrary number to counter accusations about the usage of arbitrary numbers.

Could you please rephrase that? I'm not sure I understand what your point is.

I hate Toyota as much as the next guy, but fining is not the way to solve this problem. The people that knew about the issues and did nothing won't be effected by this nearly as much as the little guys working for Toyota that didn't do shit wrong. The people that knew and let it slide need to go to prison, but I guess this is just another example of, "we don't send rich people to prison."
