The end of a journey
Late last July a white 67 Firebird was towed to our shop as a shell with the request we install an unseen motor and transmission. Allow my to describe shell. It had nothing in it no seats, no carpet, no glass, no dash, no door handles just a steering column laying on the floor that you had to hold up to steer. There was no wiring anywhere on this car the owner and stripped all of the original wiring out. He had pulled off all the original knobs, pulled the window tracks and crank handles. It had no rear brakes on the stock rear end and only rotors and calipers on the front no lines, and those were not even installed correctly. Basically this was a pile of sheet metal and nothing else. 3 days after receiving the car we get the motor, a fully built 502 with an Edelbrock EFI kit. 2 days after that we get a turbo 400 trans. We had to custom make our own motor mounts and trans cross member as the car came originally with a 2 speed. After we got the motor and trans in the car the owners father decided it would be easier to just let us finish the work rather than his son and his son's friend work on it at home. So for the last 7 months we have been slowly building and rebuilding this car. Put a non-locking Ford 9" with 28 spline axles in it, we tried to explain that was not a good rear end for that motor but they stuck with it as they had already bought it. We installed a complete painless wiring harness in it everything from the headlights to the taillights was wired up, put in all the glass and even gave it electric windows. We got it up and running and street legal the day before thanksgiving and personally delivered it to the customer. He drove it for a few days and parked it in his garage until mid January when he brought it back to us because "the back tires don't do anything but spin". The customer told us he wanted us to do whatever we thought was best to make it stick. We have since installed front and rear sway bars, new rear 2 piece springs, cal track with new shocks, and a wavelok third member with 38 spline axles. It is still running the 235/17 tires it came in with but the customer is supposed to be bringing us a set of 305 nitto's. This car has been a blast and a pain at the same time, it is awesome to look back at where we started and where we are today and how much more can/could/will be done. This car is making in the neighborhood of 650+ at the wheels, just talked to the engine builder yesterday who said the motor made 793.3 on his engine dyno. All in all this is a MONSTER of a Firebird and its things like this that make my job so much fun.
Alright onto the pictures. Final rear end ![]() Rear looking forward ![]() Engine bay with one big motor ![]() Semi finished interior headed to resto shop next week ![]() Interior from the passenger side ![]() Only full body shot a took (with my cell phone) I will try to get a better one Monday ![]() If anybody wants to see anything else let me know and I will take more pictures Monday and I will also put up some pictures of the gorgeous Ford custom we have in the shop now. |
