2024 Battery source for dashcam

I know that Gen5diy sells a radar detector/dashcam harness that plugs in on the right side interior, but it's advertised as an ignition only source. I'd like a battery source for the dashcam. I know I'll need to convert it to 5v. Is there anything behind the rearview mirror I can use or does anyone else have a solution? I've seen the Blackview battery, but don't want to go that way as I'm almost always doing short drives that won't have time to charge the dedicated battery.

I wired mine to the front fuse box. One switched fuse so its on when the car is on, and one active fuse for when I want to use the parking mode. I can find the exact fuses I used after work if that helps.

I know that is an option and I've done it before with my 2018, but was hoping there was an easier way.

I checked mine and it's only active when in ignition or accessory modes, so no joy there.

I'm considering using one of the dome lights which appear to be hot all the time, but not sure if there's any sort of time out on the voltage. The dashcam only pulls 2A so I would hope the wiring would support the small extra load.

I was thinking about using the OBD and this one cuts off if it detects a low battery which I really like. I think I’ll go this route.

I use the Black Vue Power Magic Pro. Set to 120 hours, it will record for up to 5 days after you shut the vehicle off. If the battery drops below 12 volts it shuts down.

I looked at that, but in my situation I just don’t think it would work well. I don’t have a daily commute and most of my driving is short trips, but I also will be leaving the car at the airport for extended periods, sometimes for up to a week at a time.

I believe the hardwire kit from Viofo (for their cameras) supports things like low voltage shut off and such and it would support direct wire to an always-on source and do the power conversion. Not sure what camera you're looking to use...

I have a Garmin 67W, but I've ordered the Viofo A139 and it should be here today. I think I'm going to put the A139 in the Camaro and move the Garmin to the Tahoe. I also ordered the Garmin OBD tap. It was more expensive compared to the generic ones, but it has a 24h feature and it's a bit slimmer profile.

I saw a Youtube vid by Lethal Garage a while back that said the On Star required full time power. He tapped into that for adding his home link. Its up by the rear view mirror. Maybe you could find the vid for help.

Thanks for the info, but I think I have it figured out. I'm going to tap the OBD port as there's purpose designed products that have other advantages.

Contact Gen5DIY. They will make a harness that has constant power. Plugs into the same spot as the ignition powered one. They made one up for me.
