new brakes
getting ready to buy new rotors and pads for the front of my 2015 RS.dont want anything fancy,drilled,slotted.just OEM quality replacement parts or better.suggestions would be appreciated,as well as an answer to the question of reusing the torque to yield caliper bracket bolts.just watched a u tube video where they just reused the old ones,no loctite or anything...i dont want parts falling off.

I reused my caliper bolts, when I adjusted the emergency brakes on the rears, this summer. Have total confidence in them. Loctite probably doesn’t hurt but, I didn’t bother. You got to crank ‘em pretty hard to get that last 1/4 turn (90* past the torque spec), trust me.

so,basically like any other car,tighten them and then give it a good crank to make sure they dont fall out? wouls till like opinions on a good set of stock type rotors and pads...

TTY is the torque spec of the bolt, I believe it is 30 ft.lb. plus 90 degrees (1/4 turn).

ok,will borrow a torque wrench.thinking about NAPA rotors and pads or GM.

I've reused the bolts too, when I took off the calipers and brackets to paint them; just threw on some blue loc-tite and torqued to roughly 100 ft/lbs (far from the TTY spec which works out to like 200 ft/lbs, but I was worried about snapping the bolt even at 100. Been a few years and the brakes still haven't fallen off.
I'd just go with GM/OEM pads and rotors unless you can find cheaper from a reputable brand (Stop Tech, etc.).

A little red Loctite is good insurance although it does make taking them out a fitness event.

GM calls for the bolts to be replaced, which I do for every brake job on this car, but as others have stated, it's pretty much your call. Something to do with the bolts being under too much tension over time and possibly snapping? I don't know. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with reusing the bracket bolts; I just do it because I'm a perfectionist sometimes.

If they are TTY they should not be re-used. They have been torqued to the yield point, so now, when they are torqued to the same tension, they will begin to get work hardened and prone to failure.
This discussion comes up fro time to time and I can't understand why people claim it's optional to follow directions made by ENGINEERS for your SAFETY. |

I defy anyone to show me a technician anywhere who uses a torque wrench when performing brake service.....doesn't make it right but it's a fact! As for brake part recommendations, if your dead set on oem which would be my first choice, I've had good success with CarQuest gold pads. I routinely use them on our used non-GM cars and have never had them come back being noisy.

As I stated, I replace mine because I'm a perfectionist, but I don't put this in the same category with more critical elements of the vehicle. |
