BMW M240i as a Camaro alternative
The newly released M240i is a rear drive based coupe with a 382 HP turbo V6 that always seems to punch well above it's weight- the M340i with the same engine is virtually a match for 0-60 and 1/4 mile acceleration times of the Camaro SS.
Two door, grown a bit larger with time but projected to slot in at about the same weight as the SS. So: Attitude 2 doors Gas motor (and by all accounts a lusty, blown howler that rips) yet designed brand new for this weird transitory world + 2" of height, might be too comfortable and usable but can we adapt? Priced in the realm of the 2SS Camaro (48500k base price for the M240i XDrive, eventually the RWD only version should be released) No MT- I get this one. If that's your deal, better get your order in for a 22 SS or LT1 or start trolling Autotrader I post this as a serious shopper of both of these cars, Camaro 1SS or the Bmw M240i. The Camaro warranty is 1 year longer but goes out of bumper to bumper 1 year earlier. I've read that these cars if maintained diligently can give reliable service, but repairs won't be cheap. Anyone else cross shop these automotive birds of a feather? |

Boring, dull, uninspiring. BMW cars are watered down and approaching Tesla levels of appliances.

2017 M240i with 335HP version of the 3.0 Liter turbo 6:
Standing ¼-mile: 12.7 sec @ 111 mph Source: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...tested-review/ 2020 M340i with 382 HP 3.0 V6 (Same motor as the 2022 M240i and 21 onward Toyota Supra) ¼-mile: 12.3 sec @ 114 mph Source: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/ For comparison, the 2019 Camaro SS Auto tested by Car and driver managed: Standing ¼-mile: 12.2 sec @ 118 mph I'd say it should be right in the ballpark. The 22 M240i might weigh a hundred or so pound less than the 20 M340i, but it's not out in the wild yet. |

I cross shopped a used M2. Well, it wasn't really cross shopping. I was pretty much set on the M2. From the reviews, thought the SS 1le was too much of a compromise for a daily driver, but wanted to test drive one since it was right by the BMW dealer, and i'd known the salesman there. Well after the test drive, i changed my mind, the Camaro wasn't useless, i could see out of it, the kids could fit in the back seat, it was new, and a little cheaper!

FYI, the B58 is an inline 6, not a V6. Last edited by EV2DEMON; 09-22-2021 at 08:17 AM. |

Would you consider chocolate milk as a whiskey alternative? I think you might.

After driving a focus st for 94k miles and my gen 6 v6 manual17 k miles I would have a civic type r if the seats were not so painful to me.That being said I like my camaro ,it's comfy and has great driving position for me.I don't think comfort has all to do with roof height as camaro is better on my back than focus st.

See a lot of Bimmers at the track, last track day a guy brought a brand new M5 to the track. BMW has a pretty large following. 382hp is plenty enough to get around the track for the novice and intermediate class like some of us.

Why a 1SS, why not a 2SS? It should match more favorably to a BMW, feature wise...

Are you going to take the cars to the track? I don't mean the drag strip. I mean an actual track. Chevy apparently offers a track warranty for the SS models. Are you ever going to transport more than one other passenger? Get the BMW. It won't be comfortable for someone in the back seat, but the Camaro's backseat is hot garbage. Do you value the dealership experience? The BMW should be much better. Make sure you verify what features a base M240i comes with. The German companies are notorious for up charging on a lot of stuff. You may have to pay an up charge or subscription for Apple Car Play, whereas its already included in the Camaro. |

i could be wrong but i think the bang for the buck is better with the chevy, repairs on a BMW are expensive.

That said, BMW does include 3 years of scheduled maintenance in the price of the car - I won't call it free because you do pay a premium for the brand name. It also won't offset the large gap in base MSRP over a Camaro, or even the difference between a loaded 2SS and a base M240i.

Nebraska seems like a fine place to enjoy an SS Camaro, as it appears the sun is setting on the gas-fueled American muscle car era. BMW's five years from now won't be much different from today, even if they are electric.
