Insurance Comparison
So I called my agent (Progressive) a few days ago to get a general estimation of what the 2010 Camaro would be, and which drivetrain i should buy. So to cop a feel, I asked him for to rate for me the 2009 CTS (V6) and the 2009 Mustang GT (V8).
When he calls back, he gives some stellar news. The difference for me is $15. Looks like the SS is in my future afterall. Has anyone else done something similiar? |

Mustangs usually have higher insurance than Camaros. And since the Camaro will basically be a tank on rubber tires, the crash tests should give lower rates. The way I understand it, insurance is based on how often, statistically, the car is wrecked and how expensive replacement parts are. Mustangs are wrecked more often than Camaros.

Cars aren't insured by HP anymore.

I did this recently for the insurance thread in the Pricing/Ordering section. For me, the difference in insurance premiums for a year between a v6 Mustang and a Z06 Corvette was $190/yr. Given the differences in HP, I think it is safe to assume HP isn't really used much for premium calculations. Repair cost for parts is probably the biggest factor.
2008 911: $1193.40/yr 2008 Corvette Z06: $853.80/yr 2008 Cayman S: $853.80/yr (yep, the same as the 'vette) 2008 Charger SRT8: $798.60/yr (Online system doesn't recognize the Challenger VIN's yet.) 2008 CTS: $764.80/yr 2008 Mustang GT Premium: $752.60/yr 2008 Mustang V6 Premium: $663.40/yr |

Shop around for insurance. I've used Nationwide, Progressive, Farmers, and Geico. Most, if not all, have online quote tools you can use. I cut my current 6 month premium from $650 (Progressive) to $523 (Geico) by spending 10 minutes on the Geico website. |

They key is discounts, I have multi car discount, multi policy discount(state farm insures my house as well as my cars), both me and my wife are over 25, neither have tickets or accidents (knock on wood). I qualify for good student (college) but since I get so much of a discount right now anyway they wont let me use it. Just for reference I looked into getting a CBR 600 as a commuter and my quote was $23.00 a month for full coverage insurance. PS - From what I've heard NY is one of the worst states to get insured in, as in really expensive...

Be careful who you end up going with. I can tell you, for a fact, at least here in California, a LOT of these companies ONLY look for the bottom line and not necessarily the actual repair of the car. I'm not going to mention names, however, I had to work with an insurance company that only really considered repair vs. replacement cost percentages. For example, if a truck bedside required 20 hours of repair, not including paint or removing/installing trim, they'd rather spend more money on repairing that bedside than replace it, even if it were cheaper. I got in trouble with them because I wanted to replace higher than their percentage and they didn't like it.
My bottom line, is I have Mercury and know they aren't as big as a lot of companies already stated and all I'll say is I'd rather pay a little more for a company that doesn't use aftermarket replacement parts or push hard on used parts, like MOST of those listed. I'm not trying to be dark on anyone, I just get really heated when I think about all the times these insurance companies got super cheap with the repairs when the customers' rates didn't reflect the repair the insurance company ended up paying for. Do the research, and get the details on what kind of parts they will pay for. If you don't mind used or aftermarket parts being put on your car, then it's no problem. If you do, most of these companies are going to suprise you if the time comes to have repairs performed on your car...

New York is one of the worst states to do anything in. Well, except modifying cars; california beats wins in that category. The prices they charge around here...it's like they DON'T want you to drive...it's rediculous!!
