Why aren't 3.45 gears worth it in a L99?
Hey all,
So I have a L99 that I want to give some more 'oomph', but the 3.91's just don't appear to be what I want right now. Reasons are, I do quite a bit of highway driving and I don't want to kill my highway mileage. Also, to get the 3.91's it will probably run me $1k or so. Now, I've heard people saying the 3.45's aren't worth it, but I figure if the 3.91's give a 20% increase, shouldn't the 3.45's give like a 5%? If 5% of 400 is 20, isn't 20 not bad? I can probably source a 3.45 differential for $500 or so, and maybe sell my 3.27 for 1-200ish (i'm guessing). Can someone tell me why this doesn't make sense? Oh, and I'll probably be throwing in a 3200 or 3600 converter at some point soon.

I just say go with the GM oem 3.91 gears. Oem quality. Big difference compared to stock and I also have a muti disk 3600-3700 circle D stall. I love it. I’m not sure how the 3.45’s would be. You’re gonna need to recalibrate the car for the new gears too

3.91s if staying Bolton’s or NA. I had them and they worked great. Once I went FI, 3.45 or stay stock IF going crazy power..

From what I've heard, 'it feels like the car lost 1000 pounds'.
Thanks for the help guys, as I mentioned, I don't want to take a big hit on the MPG since having 3.91s and the higher stall will hurt. I'm also trying to avoid having to buy bigger/wider tires!

Your concerns and the Math consider;
1. First gear ratio of the automatic 2. Fuel economy 3. High stall converter 4. Tire size used in daily driving (perhaps a smaller track tire?) 5. A lot of highway driving 6. Power output of the engine 7. Track or drag (occasional or often) You should be able to make an informed decision. I would only add a posi unit such as true trac. I am absolutely happy with my selection.

Going from 3.27 to 3.45 is not even a 1/4 ratio gain. Not worth it

That’s what I was thinking. Maybe 3.73s instead?

The concern is having a useable first gear 4.03 which is different from 3.01 and throw in a torque converter; Can it reasonably hook up? Again goes back to the original question “primary objective”, everything has a cost....

Ya, I was reading Pro Stock Johns comments on another thread and he said he had bolt-ons, added the CD 3200 converter and he was having issues hooking. I honestly drive pretty normal, and every now and then get on it, so I'm not looking for a strip-only setup.

I have a 4000 stall with 3.91 and was doing 1.60 60s on a 285/40/18 et streeet s/s now I’m back to a 305/45/18 nitto nt05r. When I had the 285/40/18 my ratio was 4.15 I was doing 70mph at 2500ish rpm now I’m at like 2100ish and I still get 23 on the highway

Fast list guys run 3.91s
Don't see any 3.45 or 3.73 gears in those cars.
