This could be the true jumpstart for urban electric vehicles. These LEO vehicles get used a lot. Those battery systems are going to get a real workout and they will get the bugs worked out. This could mean a lot for new types of reliability and performance. I think law enforcement is the perfect arena for these types of hybrid vehicles.

Pretty sure that whatever bugs you're thinking of have either been worked out over the countless millions of miles & 20 years of use that hybrids have been subjected to or they're not going to get solved by getting put into police cars.

And while police cars have a harsher duty cycle than commuter vehicles, its not really much worse than taxi cabs. And there have been an awful lot of hybrids sold for taxi service. Wouldn't surprise me if that was the #1 use for hybrid Camry's and Accords.

Also ... hybrids are not electric vehicles. The problems of EVs have little to do with hybrid technology. The biggest impediment to EVs going mainstream is the cost of the battery, followed by recharge times and energy density. None of those things matter too much in a hybrid because you only need 1/10 or even 1/100 the battery capacity of a pure EV.




All that said, a hybrid patrol car makes a ton of sense. The purchase cost difference on a fully kitted out police car is going to be pretty minimal but the operating cost is going to be a lot less. And they'll have little advantages too, like not having to deal with an engine that won't start because of a dead battery. With all the on board electrical capacity, police could have the lights flashing for hours with the engine turned off. I'm sure there are other advantages too but thats just off the top of my head.

THANK YOU! The only good ford I owned was my 1988 f150 larriat ex cab ex bed duel gas tank upgraded to a f250 rear end and the lethargic 351 efi Windsor. I had a 97 ford Taurus just abysmal in every way nickel and dime repair special. And ny 2001 ex LAPD P71 that blew 10k in repairs in 4 years. Every other week between the 2 cars I was left stranded on the side of the road. The crown Vic had a bad habit of just everything going bad all at once. In one month it blew the rear diff, fuel pump went bad shot 2 sparkplugs out the top of the motor the alternator went, warped 5 sets of rotors.

The f150 was 4 years of fun payed 1300$ for it and used it as a mudding truck just beat on it jumped it went off roading so much abuse and it never let me down not once. Such a good truck even if it wondered and had 5 inch of play in the wheel and no power steering.

Completely disagree. Police should not be testing anything. Everything should be tested and perfected before our LEO's get them. Let taxis test them. But not first responders.

That is odd. A friend of mine is a cop and he said the best police vehicles he ever had were the Crown Vics(With the exception of his supervisors Tahoe lol). He said the chargers were junk and the impala was the absolute worst.

The crown Vice were good because everything else was crap at the time. The Taurus and Explorers are the biggest pieces of shit I've ever driven, the only thing that breaks down more are the chargers. We have one Tahoe and it's awesome, wish we can replace our whole fleet with them. Ford should just start making the Vic's again. I don't have any experience with the Caprice other than sitting in it, but it's at least designed to comfortably fit a guy bigger than 5'10 and 180 pounds unlike the Taurus which makes me feel like I'm slowly getting crushed.
