Yesterday I started the car, released the brake and tried to back up. The car wouldn't move. I shifted to first gear and accelerated and it still wouldn't go. After several attempts, it broke loose and made a strange noise like I had run over something. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else?

Nothing to worry about. It's the parking brake shoes that are "stuck" to the drum.
Happens if the car has been sitting for some days with the parking brake engaged.

Many thanks! I washed it last week and put it in the garage. It had been sitting almost a week.
