Its a strong indicator of a cars road course performance in general, as well as overall handling.

While I (like many other enthusiasts) do pay attention to 'ring times....I think it would be refreshing to see some Top Gear-esque ranking system with one driver pushing all of these cars just to remove yet one more variable. While I certainly believe that the factory drivers for these laps are incredibly capable, I find myself often wondering well what if you had one guy take out the top 10 cars on the list....would the cars still finish in that order?

I know that. But just because a car does 7:00 on the ring doesn't mean some dude in Rodeo drive can too. It's useless to discuss times. As a tuning tool? All day. All weaknesses are shown immediately.

umm its about showing what the car is capable of, that seems worth talking about to me.

I don't ever recall seeing anyone claim that some random driver could achieve those times. Likewise, I never see anyone claim that some random guy can lay down a specific 1/4 mile time or hit 60 miles per hour in whatever.something seconds. To the average driver, all those things are equally impossible to reach. That doesn't stop anyone from saying that the CAR is capable of this or that though, because the CAR is capable of those things -even if a specific driver isn't.

I wouldn't say it's useless. Just because someone can't drive a car at its limits doesn't mean that measure is invalid. Same thing with quarter mile times...or are all those times useless too?

I'd be willing to bet that if an average driver who tracks their car would get to test drive each car on that list, the order would be fairly similar...just with slower times.

I understand different driver, different day, different conditions...but it is a measurement of a cars potential regardless.

1/4 times and road course times are so different that I'm not sure why you bring it up.
Any clown can achieve magazine 0-60 and 1/4 times. Not so much with the Ring. A missed shift here, wrong gear there and we just added seconds to the time.

Ok. Let's do this: you enjoy these ring times and I'll not care about them.

Basically we agree to disagree.

Enjoy your day!

There's a section in that other Forum dedicated to Corvettes called "ask Tadge". In there he writes about taking the Z06 to the ring. He makes it pretty clear that getting a fast lap time is not why they are there. That they take the trip over there, and spend all that money, because the Ring is the best place to dial in suspension and handling. If they have time, and the right conditions, Mero will do a couple of hot laps, but that is not the purpose of the trip.

That said, these times are somewhat good for comparison between different cars. However, different drivers skew the numbers if anyone looks at these things like gospel truth. I mean, if I simply wanted the fastest Ring time possible, I would hire a pro race driver with a ton of time on that track.

Not sure I follow your logic here. They do have pro drivers take these cars around the ring and they aren't missing shifts, if they do, throw that lap out. They do NOT have the aforementioned "clowns" driving them...

The idea is to see how quick a car can get around the ring with the best drivers in them. How could you be against that?
