odd encounter in the Camaro..

was sitting in the car with my daughter while my wife ran into the market to grab a few last minute items for tomorrows Super Bowl Party..

2 guys walked up to me and asked me "how much did you pay for your car?"

maybe it's just me, but I find the question a bit too personal and a bit insulting to be coming from some complete stranger in a parking lot.

Trying to be nice, I made a simple reply "Camaros cost from $20,000 to $60,000 depending on what model and options you buy"

The guy kept pressing me, "but how much did this car cost?"

I wouldn't answer his question and just repeated what I had said prior, and my wife got into the car so we left..

I decided it was probably wise to drive around for a bit before going home to be sure someone wasn't following us..

----

Is it just me being paranoid, or is this just an odd line of questioning from some complete stranger?

It seems odd to me, especially since he wouldn't take the hint, and kept pressing for an answer.

Yes, to me, that's line stepping. From a friend maybe or if it's come up in a conversation. You could have told him what some guys on here say. Do a search. There's a thing called the Internet.

I have a funny similar story...
I was coming out of the liquor store in my Saturn Sky { That I traded for my SS} and these guys with mullets in a clapped out 3rd gen Firebird asked me how much $$ did I win in the lottery to be able to afford this car...
I just laughed and said...
It's just a Saturn man...

But I have no place with people that are asking prices on my personal toys.

It's just rude.

have learned from being in customer service that some people just don't have that "personal space" nerve and think a question like this is completely ok to ask a random person. That being said I would have prolly done the same thing as you, or if I felt brave enough I may have slightly quoted fast and furious.. "More than you can afford pal....CAMARO! "

Yeah, I hate when people ask what I paid. They are just stupid.
What if you traded something in, which price do they want to know?
Or do they want to know the price before or after dealer added options and tax?

i don't personally find it an awkward question in the right situation, if I'm getting work done on it or at a car meet I will answer, but grocery store parking lot with kid in the car.... No Bueno.

Mr iCREDIBLE I'm the exact the same way. My response to people is "there's one way to find out!"

They'll always ask "What way is that?"

I tell them "Call a dealership you asshole!"

I don't mind the question in the right setting, if they had come up and said nice car, what's something like this run, or something along that line yeah sure I'll talk to them.

But these guys just walked up and said "what did you pay for this" didn't like my answer and pressed me by asking again.

Personally I took it as someone feeling out whether or not I was a good target to rob.
