Cop post speeding ticket on FaceBook

Hoping this link works for this FaceBook post. But here is what happens. Guy gets caught in a new Lambo, on Dealer plate, doing 100kmh, 60mph, on a 50kmh, 30mph, zone. Its a residential street and its wrong no doubt about and he gets a $348 fine.
Now the BC kicker. Few years back the government sold us on a new law to go after drug lords money and we get a civil forfeiture bill to take away drug lords profits, or so we thought. Now they've come to use it for speeding tickets and if you are doing in excess of 40kmh over the posted limit, 25mph, they call a tow truck and impound your car for 7 days. The $348 ticket is nowmover $2K to get it back and higher insurance rates. We have a group fighting it but its tough because the government is making boat loadsmof cash from stealing our property. Cop is judge, jury and sentencing. No judge or process involved and its done and over 15 minutes at the side of the road and you are walking away with no car. They dont even drive you to the next exit.

Also, since when can police post stuff on their police FB page and joke about taking the guys new Lambo away? Wonder if they realize the liability to get a $348 ticket cost them $45,000 in tow damage and paint repais.

Im teuely intereted in everyones feedback. Especially our friends in uniform who deal with this stuff. The ticket was deserved, residential area snd no way to remotely defend it.

I don't like it or agree with it, buuuut that just goes to show that you better just follow the law. If you want to get in your car and smash it and have some fun stretching it out, do it when the conditions are in your favor. Pick your spots and be smart, for your own good.

People drive fast on the road, because they don't have anywhere else to do it. I wish they would take the money from these insane tickets and build places for us to go

Well, a few things ot note-
This occurred in BC, so I am unfamiliar with Canada's laws regarding this.

In the US, this might go down very differently.
Based on my experiences with US law as an LEO, I can say this, even though it doesn't really apply...

The FB post is to the official police/ticket page so the officers involved would not be personally liable assuming this is legal in BC.

Usually as long as no intentional damage or negligence is involved, the owner of the impounded vehicle is responsible for any and all damages occurring during towing and impound storage.

Personally, I would have explained to the owner that due to the lowered stance of the lambo, it would not fit on the tow truck and that I would need to drive it to the impound lot. I would then call my watch commander and go on vacation for 7 days.

I remember a thread on here from not long ago about someone from the western US traveling through Alberta and ended up in the same boat for a speeding infraction.

Don't think there's anything this bad in the states yet, but Virginia comes real close.

Agreed.
Virginia loves to tout itself as a place of freedom, with a real "Don't tread on me attitude," yet they are Draconian in their enforcement of speeding laws, and will probably be the next to last state to adopt marijuana legalization (Texas will be the last hold out)

Most states in the US have laws that state doing 25 mph or more over is considered reckless driving which is an arrestable offense. If the guy did that down here, depending on the officer discretion, not only would his car be impounded but he would also be spending a month in jail. Not going to get sympathy from me about the law, if you don't want your car taken don't go that much over.

That is one of the reasons why I let BC and moved to Alberta. I'm not saying I condone the speeding but I find the laws there to be very burdening to the average citizen. For example air care, every bridge in the lower mainland is tolled, gas prices are ridiculous, and some of the posted speed limits I swear are just there for cops to reel in the citations. And lets not forget about their no fault insurance system known as ICBC. This is probably the biggest rip off BC has. Even with a 40% good drivers discount, I am paying half in Alberta with house insurance and 3 cars!

The only good thing the BC government did going back about 10 years ago was getting rid of photo radar. But the cops want to bring it back and it's constantly in the news like they are preparing everyone that it's coming back.

its a lot different ,in a beater with bad brakes a victim potential for every time it goes down a hill ,but super cars with the stopping power and a quick passing ability have less of a hazard and such impounds should only be for reckless driving ie street racing in city limits

In the US, the law would probably be contested using the constitution's 8th amendment:"cruel and unusual punishment". Alternatively public outrage would, in a real sense, threaten a politician's job. This is happening now with red light cameras.

The line favoring personal liberties vs codified social norms (i.e. creating laws to enforce what is culturally right or wrong) is a little higher in the US. Individual rights are still well defended in the US, relatively speaking. The constitution I think well considered drawing the line thickly between "inalienable rights" and laws that are just a reflection of the mood of the country at the time, but we do get ourselves in wads such as alcohol prohibition and the national 55 mph speed limit.

If I were you I would try and get the law changed by stressing the objective facts about how the law has or has not limited drug availability. My guess is not much since supply will meet demand. Next move on to safety analysis. It took us 40ish years to get rid of the "temporary fuel saving measure" 55 mph national speed limit, so be patient. In that case safety nazi's later claimed deaths would dramatically increase but that didn't stand up to the facts. Highway deaths are now at their lowest point in recorded history despite the lifting of the speed limit and millions more cars on the road.

You are assuming that the drivers of these supercars also have the talent and reflexes to match.
Most do not.
I am 100% in favor a a rigidly and Draconianly enforced speed limit with a sliding scale based on Vehicle/Condition of said vehicle/Road conditions/Drivers talent and abilities as demonstrated by a yearly skill test.

this would mean that every year you have to test you reflexes and high speed driving ability under various conditions.

Officer- "Oh, you passed the skills test, and are driving a ZL!, you may proced unmolested at speeds up to 150."

-"Oh, you are a complete nimrod, and driving a, 82 Honda with bald tires. You are hereby sentenced to 5 years mandatory public transportation. Should you be caught violating this statute at any time during said sentence, we will chop off one of your hands."

Oh, that would be so glorious!!! Imagine, all the roads virtually empty as most drivers are complete f*cktards. Imagine all the easy parking...

102 KMH is equal to about 62 MPH so I guess I don't see the big deal.
